In the past 4 weeks we've received 3 calls (that I actually answered from an unknown number) wanting to help me with my computer. I immediately picked up from his accent and leading statement that the lowlife phoning was a scammer. The first time, I asked him for his name and number, he wouldn't give me any info so I told him in no uncertain terms to get lost and not to phone again.. click he hung up. The second phone call, I played along and asked him what was wrong with my computer, he said it was putting errors onto the network, and it needed fixing. I said there's nothing wrong with my computer and asked him what errors and where was he calling from.. click. The third call, I called him a moron and told him I didn't own a computer, click... he immediately hung up. I hope I didn't offend him with the moron comment. If you get a call, whatever you do, don't believe anything these guys say, they are theives and criminals out so get your personal information. They have no way of knowing if you own a computer or not unless you tell them, so probably the best answer is to say you don't have a computer. They will immediately hang up since they don't want to waste time with you when there are thousands of potential other prey to be fleeced. Another good answer is the friendly "F...off, you useless loser, and don't call again". http://www.calgarysun.com/2011/10/22/watch-for-computer-scan-scam-police |

Oh I love talking to these guys. It's entertaining. I lead them on and on and then I tell them I have an IBM 6000 mainframe. Then i tell them to call me anytime they want to because I have a Commodore Pet that I can't get on the internet with. Never hear from them again. |

Lots of those calls here. We've tried arguing, insulting and lying. They do seem to have stopped now. It would be interesting to play along and see what happens. I suspect they direct you to a website that infects your computer, then charge you to clean it. |

Direct you to a website? You just tell them you have a Commodore Pet that doesn't connect to the internet and runs on DOS. They won't phone you back. They don't want to waste their time. |

When I got the second cal I told them I had already spoken to the RCMP and not to call again. So far, so good. The 1st time they wanted me to wait for a 2nd call and repeat a code and say yes. ha ha ha, not that dumb yet ! But they do make it sound legit until you realize that microsoft does its updates online, not by phone and 'this is the weirdest thing I ever heard of'.....goes thru your mind. |

Talking with the neighbor the other day - she took the bait, allowed them into her computer, gave them her credit card number to withdraw funds and the crooks phoned back to say they could not repair her computer and it would cost her more. She told them she refused to pay them anymore unless they fixed her computer. I then quietly informed her she was "hooped". To contact her credit card company to stop any purchases on it & have the number changed; call her bank, contact the credit rating sites and have a security alert put on her account .. etc. etc. She also does online banking and claimed she was secure ... I told her only to a certain degree but in her case not so. If they had access into her computer all they need to do is put in a Keylogger and the keylogger will read all passwords, etc. she types in. So that also means they have all her passwords. If she keeps anything personal such as income tax, they have her SIN number as well. I told her I live across the hall from her, so why didn't she come and ask me first so she said, she will from now on. blink 000 Kinda late now that they have stolen her identity. Now her nightmare is about to begin. I had a call supposedly from the Police commissioner's Office collecting donations to help hungry street children. Well, I did not fall off a turnip truck either ... after I hung up, I phoned the Police commissioner's Office and gave them the phone number which I picked up from my call display & relayed the conversation with the crooks. No way do they solicit by phone for donations and that they would investigate. I never heard from the crooks again. My goal is to educate as many people as I can on security. This is why I post all the alerts & updates which I obtain from reliable sources & post here and several other forums. The more people that become aware, the less people the crooks can bilk out of their hard earned money. |

It's hard to believe that in this day and age that someone would give out that kind of information over the phone. Wow! Do they also click on the pop up that says you are the 10,000 th visitor and click on here to get your prize? I must be awfully lucky. When I sign out and back in I am still the 10,000 th visitor after 1 hour. |

I am getting these calls, also. I got angry and told them not to call me again, but I did get another call later on. Now I just hang up. I expect that soon, when most people are on to them, they will come up with another scam. We are on the "do not call list" so don't know why we keep getting these calls. One time it was at 10:30 at night. This was upsetting, because you figure if someone is calling you at that hour, it must be some sort of emergency or bad news. |

Imjene - I think you have to update the "no call list". If you have call display you will see the phone number .. you can place a block on those phone numbers - check with your phone server on how to do this. If there is no phone number showing, it means they blocked it from their end so you can also place a block on any calls that do not display a phone number. Check with your phone company. Campy - I have a friend who still believes in that Bill Gates scam where money would be sent in exchange for personal information. She also clicks on stuff she has no idea what it is. Example: She had a pop up on her screen which told her to instal a software so she did. When I checked her computer I asked her what she used that software for and she said she doesn't and has no idea what it is for but she downloaded it because a message came up on her computer to instal it. Another neighbor has been doing online banking and asked me look at his computer as it was very slow ... yep, he had 22 trojans & viruses - oooh 02. I almost wet my knickers and I need not go any further as you can well imagine the rest. Another woman I know disables the firewall on her computer because she can't play Pogo if her firewall is on. Well her computer got hacked and I sure had some fun with the hacker but in the end I won out over him. So I set up her security and what does she do ... she disables the firewall and then complains to me she is having computer issues. This time I told her to take her computer to a local shop and when she has to pay for the fix, she just might learn something. |

Not sure that updating "do not call list" helps at all. I did just that a couple of months ago, and have had more nuisance marketing calls than ever before. Perhaps the list has been hacked. Take care, Pat |

Another woman I know disables the firewall on her computer because she can't play Pogo if her firewall is on. Can't you buy a disc with that game on it so she doesn't have to disable the firewall? Boy if they are smart enough to disable the firewall I give them credit for something even though it's harmful. Did you teach them that or did they learn on their own? You must be frustrated at times. Why not ask them if you can install the remote feature and check on their computer? |

I had a call from a scammer the other day! She asked me if I had my computer turned on and connected to the internet. I told her no, because it has a virus in it and I have to take in for a repair. That seemed to surprise her and she hung up. No more calls, since! |

I have received two calls in the last month...the first one I asked the caller since he knows that I have a virus - what type of system do I have. He said it was Microsoft (which I do have) then I told him it was a Mac...he hung up! The next call I simply told him to F off and he wished me the same....Then I hung up. Since I have Shaw phone...I blocked the number and have never heard from them again. The callers all had a East Indian accent and I am sure they were calling from outside of the country...even though the call indicated that it came from my area code. When checking on the computer for information I found that these guys can have a number appear on your call display indicating it is from your area when in reality it originates in another country. By the way, the do not call list has no control over calls originating outside the country...how many times have I been called from Florida or Ohio about improving my credit rating -- lots! ( my credit rating is excellent) The No Call list is useless...I have been listed since the service started and I have complained on their website on a number of calls (what a waste of time and effort) Under the Do not Call rules there are many organizations who are except....for instance: note that the following calls are still allowed under the National DNCL rules: https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/plt-cmp-eng •Canadian registered charities; •A telemarketer with whom you are considered to have an existing business relationship. An existing business relationship occurs when you: ◦Purchase, lease, or rent a product or service in the last eighteen (18) months from the telemarketer; ◦Have a written contract with the telemarketer for a service that is still in effect or expired within the last eighteen (18) months; and/or ◦Ask a telemarketer about a product or service within the last six (6) months. •Political parties, candidates (including those in federal, provincial and municipal elections), and associations of members of a political party; •Persons collecting information for a market research or public opinion polls; •Newspapers of general circulation for the purpose of soliciting subscriptions; •Persons or entities to whom you have provided express consent to be called; or •Business-to-business calls. My MP was sending out recorded calls and some late in the evening...despite repeated calls to his office and emails that I sent...my final solution for most of the unwanted calls is simply to block them on my phone. The problem is with the scammers - they keep changing their numbers or new scammers start making calls. What a pain! Edited by diboja, Dec 31 2011, 06:35 AM.
