Time was, when I got a new system, I would very soon install the best recommended free anti-virus. Download, then install, register (usually). Simple. This time around, all sorts of complications. Tried AVG first. Turns out not really free, just for 30 days. Sot tried Avast, which I prefer, anyway. After all sorts of confusing screens, offers of all sorts of other things I do not currently want, was able to download it, and install it. But still do not seem to have been able to register. I find that there are similar problems downloading updates to things such as Adobe reader, Quicktime. Is this some sort of plot on the part of the companies that sell the non-free softwareor am I paranoid? Open Office was a delightful exception to this annoyance; though I have not yet tried to instal it on this laptop. nainai |

AVG is free for the basic package. Good enough for me. The enhanced package has a charge. Just select the basic package. |

Hi Nainai, I've used Microsoft Security Essentials for a couple years now, works great, it is highly rated, free, and will update with your Microsoft updates. Here is the link, try it out and I'm sure you'll be happy. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows/products/security-essentials |

Me too! I use the free AVG on my laptop and MSE on my Win7 desktop. I just like to have a foot in both camps! |

I had selected the Free version of AVG, or so I thought. Will likely try the MS option, as I still have not been able to register Avast, although it is operational. nainai |
