(I've been NORTON/SYMANTEC for 15 years (good but big and nosy), with the exception of last year when I did the AVG frrebie (big and slow on an old computer. So with new computer (2 months) I got a freebie Norton for 60 days...just fine, but I don't want to spend any money. I have several opions and would like your recommendation: 1. Freebie Microsoft Security Essentials 2. A Freebie (with rebate) at STAPLES of McAfee Total Protection 2012 3. Trend Titanium Internet Security (free after rebate, also at Staples 4. Free AVG again. WHich shall I choose before I visit a porn site? 023 023 In those 15 years with Norton, I had to pay only for ONE year...but there are no freebies around, or none I've seen. What would you choose? |

The last time this came up I think pretty much the majority of answers were MSE. I haven't seen any complaints and personally I've been happy with it. |

I guess I'll give MSE a shot for the rest of 2012. Does anyone HATE McAfee? |

I do not like McAffee at all, when it failed me I had to search for days to find someone who knew how to remove it so I could install proper security. Somewhere I have the instructions how to do this, but not for Windows 7, only for XP Pro. |

I have the free version of AVG. No problems and I get updates at 3 a.m. in the morning. So what does one expect from an antivirus program? |

I've been using MSE on all our PCs for the past couple years, it's highly rated, works great, light on resources, updates with the MS security updates, and it's free so what more do you need ? Just make sure your Windows firewall is turned on after you uninstall Norton, but the security center will notify you if you don't. |

I have been using AVG (free) for years and have grown accustomed to it! Its never failed me. However, I recommend MSE to friends and family, for its simplicity and reliability. |

I am shocked that the list didn't include Avira, the best free one. It is quite noticeably less demanding of the processor than AVG. And what about Malwarebytes that we all turn to in times of trouble? The free version only scans the drives but the paid version is full featured. The free version is great - no demand on the processor at all - if you can remember to run it once in a while. Of course it depends on how often you see a virus. For me it is less than one a year. |

Delphi, you're correct about Malwarebytes, it is a good program and I have it as well on all PCs. I didn't mention it since the free version is on demand only and doesn't have real time protection. I run Malwarebytes once a week since no program is 100%, but for good real time protection, with set it and forget it options, MSE is my favourite. |

I'm going to use MSE. Another wrinkle: I bought the computer PRELOADED with a 2 month trial of SYMANTEC/NORTON SECURITY SUITE. It worked fine and I would keep it for free but I have no such option so I must remove it. Previous Versions (I go back to 1996 with it) had an UNINSTALL feature and it worked poorly leaving an immense amount of detritus behind. Well, now they don't even include UNINSTALL. I think I have to find and download some tool on the Web to even BEGIN the process. This new Gateway computer has a LOT of excess garbage loaded onto it. |
