Everytime I come back from a vacation where I haven't gone before, I always end up up with a feeling that I've been somehow ripped off by somebody.

In Cuba, it's the conversion of travellers cheques and those convertable pesos.

On cruises, it's Diamonds International and Art Auctions.

Does everybody here have enough experience with all sort of vacations that we can share and forewarn when a new traveller asks before embarking on his adventure?

Good thing you posted this Daniel as just this afternoon my daughter was telling me her friend and family are going to Honduras next weekend. The friend's sister, husband and family live there, and their home was broken into, they were tied up and $15,000 taken from their safe. And people think Mexico is bad.

Take care,
Pat

I also read in the news last week one of the cruise liners cancelled future excursions because there was a robbery on one of the buses with the cruise passengers.

They certainly are traps for new chums! I was interested enough to sit on my hands and wallet through one auction because I am interested in art .... but not enough to shell out with some of those ridiculous asking prices!

Even experienced travelers will pay over the odds in many countries. But it does pay to do your research before you go, read expat forums, ask questions, avoid obvious touts and tourist traps.

Don't buy watches or other things (except liquor which is a bit cheaper than duty free at the Canadian/US border; Liquor is very expensive in Canada) on the cruise. It's not worth it !

The cheapest Kaluha I found was in Cozumel where the cruise ships dock. Don't bother going to town walking up and down the main street along the water. The shop is on the upper deck of the gated shopping center straight from the pier.

And if you're at the Eastern Caribbean, I think it's at St. Maarten (Dutch side). There's a liquor store on the main tourist strip packed with people - got two (1 litre) bottles of Bailey's for about $36.

Speaking of Bailey, we bought a pack of 2 1L bottles on the cruise for about $36 (2 bottles) which is cheaper than duty free shop.

On the Fifth Estate: Vacations from Hell

On cruise ships
the medical staff are contract workers
the cruise line is not responsible for malpractice of the medical staff
they'll try to get you off the ship
cruise line industry has spent $36million fighting any efforts to make cruise liners take responsibility of their medical staff.

Make sure you are in good health before you go no your next cruise.
