Probably this has been asked before, possibly even by me! I am thinking of getting some form of e reader or tablet. Which works best as an e reader? I would also like to be able to do some of the fancy on line stuff; e mail, internet, Skype, movies. Also want to put my pictures and recipes on it. Lugging around a lap top is not really convenient when you have as many stairs as I do. So far, checking on line, the higher end Nook looks best. nainai |

If you are using a router than you have wireless so you can just hook in with another device, if you have a password on the router, you'll need to know it. No additional costs.. Bright House cable here in Florida has a modem with a built in router, for an additional one time cost and will set it up for customers. I called our cable company at home to ask about it but they don't have them. I do have a router at home which enables me to use my laptop outside, and of course any new tablet. I have a wireless printer here that works perfectly in another room, no cables needed. I'm looking into a Toshiba Thrive tablet, the drawback to it is that it's heavier, but IMO better for me than the IPad because it has a USB port, will take a memory card and has a ac/dc connection as well as battery. Interesting. I am not aware of the Toshiba device. The Youtube movie linked to below was helpful . It is possible to add ports like an HDMI port to the iPad by purchasing special adapters made b Apple My initial reaction is that I would like to learn more about what software is available for it. Just to muddy the water a bit more, I came across an article that compares the Ipad with the Kindle Fire. Its an interesting read! http://www.zdnet.com/blog/diy-it/how-to-decide-should-you-buy-a-new-ipad-or-a-kindle-fire/484?tag=nl.e539 |

Well, I bought the Toshiba Thrive and have been playing with it all afternoon, I love it. However, I've been having a problem reading some library downloads as the .epub format doesn't work. I downloaded another reader and, Amazon's free Kindle app which works fine for the library downloads designated for the kindle. Once I've downloaded the book from the library it takes me to Amazon kindle where I have to choose 'deliver to android kindle', then synchronize. A couple because of publisher rights wouldn't download directly to 'adroid kindle' but have to be saved on my computer then transferred via USB cable. Anyhoo, I have some books ready for the drive home, but I suspect I'll have the same problem with this as a regular book (car sickness). |

Thanks for the input. The topic wandered into pretty deep waters. I think I am now more confused than ever! Reminds of when we first decided to buy a computer, back in about 1985' Took us about 6 months- we did not even speak the language - but we finally settled on a Commodore 64; never regretted it; it was so much FUN, as well as useful, once we figured things out. I have to confess, i am a bit of a sucker for Flash and dazzle, which makes the iPad seductive. nainai |

It is seductive, and fun, if you can afford it go for it, I just liked the idea of the features I mentioned. I've been outside with it most of the afternoon but had to go in the shade, I was taking pictures too - 5 mg. ain't bad at all for a camera which I assume the Ipad has also. I'm going to name if AFGICA biggrin 04 Edited by friendshipgal, Mar 30 2012, 11:25 AM.

It seems to me the best tablet is one you can get help with. If your friend has an Apple tablet and knows how to use it then that is your best bet. They are complicated to use and have numerous restrictions. I found a Barnes & Noble Android tablet for $119 and bought it for my daughter. She is having a lot of trouble getting books on it; it appears to be somehow locked on B&N which has high prices. No doubt there is a way to deal with that but how do you learn how? Buying it was a foolish mistake - she would have been far better off with an iPad since she is familiar with iTouch and used iPad 1's can be found for about the same price. |

AFGICA - Another **** gadget I can't afford biggrin 04 biggrin 04 It does take some getting used to, but so far the only thing about the tablet I've found complicated is the e-reader part. Mine did come with a reader and some samples which work fine, but downloads from the library do not which are epub ( adobe), I registered for the app and so on, but they still won't open, no problem with Kindle books from the library as I downloaded the free kindle app. I suspect your daughter's tablet is locked into B & N just as the kindle is locked into Amazon so you will need to download another app. or convert files. The reason I got the Toshiba was because I can download books to my computer, convert them if I have to, then just transfer them to the tablet via USB, flash drive or a memory card. I could email them to myself which would be easier, if the file isn't too large. The Toshiba is hooked into google actually, so my email just comes in automatically when on line. I did download a GPS app but can't find it on the tablet, there is a file manager but it's not there, so will try again later. ETA: you can read epub library editions by downloading OverDrive in the Android market Edited by friendshipgal, Mar 31 2012, 02:19 AM.

If you haven't already done so I strongly recommend that anyone considering converting eBooks read the following reference http://www.teleread.com/drm/the-abcs-of-format-conversion-for-the-kindle-sony-and-nook-plus-some-calibre-tips/ PS particularly useful to AFGICA owners |

biggrin 04 Thanks for the link, I did get it sorted out but it took a while. I installed media overdrive required by the library systems to read epub. I've downloaded a couple in that format and a couple in kindle format so should have plenty to read on the way home. I must say, if I didn't have a computer to look up the information and links first then send to my gmail, it would have been more frustrating, not for the very beginner. BTW, is it necessary to install virus protection on a tablet, I was told not. Well, I know Apples don't biggrin 04 |

All this has been fascinating; thank you all so much. As to whether I can afford an iPad, I tend not to buy expensive toys for myself. If George were still alive, no doubt he would have got me one for my birthday, once I started lusting after one. So, on that basis, perhaps I can afford it. Just now, I am all out of library books; do have some I borrowed from my daughter, so not climbing the walls yet. Unfortunately, my library branch is closed Sun (as it should be) and Monday, the two days I am most likely to have someone available to take me there. nainai |

I find it funny that you have to put an ebook from the library on hold to download, as if it were an actual book, then after downloading it, it goes poof (or something) after 14 days. Sorta like Mission Impossible, after reading this tape will self destruct biggrin 04 I guess they only have so many licensed e-books. It took me a bit to realize that in order to download from the library you have to install overdrive media, after that no problem. Here's a link to Free kindle books I downloaded the Kindle app so can also read those. |
