Battle with Gravel Pit

A gravel pit is applying to open across the road from us.

We already have one gravel pit on this road and this one wants to set up right next to it. That would mean two entrances with big honkin trucks rumbling in and out and double to truck traffic at the very least.

We are concerned with the environmental problems. Dust, dust, dust which causes John's asthma to worsen and noise, noise, noise which causes my disposition to worsen.

We are all on wells and are very concerned with the dangers of polluting our water/

And, of course, we are worried about how far our properties will devaluate. This is a nice rural road with distinctive houses and nice big lots. It should be paradise for retirees but it seems there is to be no paradise for us. :crying:

Geez, Angora. That sounds like a horrible situation.

I assume you have no recourse in zoning as there is already one gavel pit there, but what about involving any environmental authorities?

If you can show that this would cause potential harm to your drinking water or anything else, you could file suit. or if you can come up with ANY legitimate basis AND if you can fund a suit, you can drive the owner crazy enough that they might decide to go elsewhere.

Sometimes gravel pits flood! If this should happen, you will be living on water front property.
Of course this will increase your tax assessment!

Talk to the owner of the gravel pit.

Ask him to buy you out.

Could you get together with all of the people on the gravel truck route and fight this?

From what you say it is worth a fight, you have a lot to lose, and John's health will be at risk.

Was part of a group that took on city hall about 4 years ago, they wanted to build multiple housing on an old school property. We won, the school is being cleaned up of asbestos and will be an elementary school again.

We did have some committed neighbours who showed up for meetings and consulted friends who were lawyers for tips. Could this be done in your neighbourhood?

Thanks Darcie, yes we are getting together and Ive contacted some anti gravel pit associations who have sent me all sorts of info and made suggestions. John is calling people and he is pretty good and shmoozing so that's going alright.

Gotta go... phone ringing.

Angora check out the people who are opposing the Shelburne gravel pit. It is being reevaluated. The Council of Canadians, Maude Barlow might be able to supply some advice.

You've got nothing to lose and a lot to gain, so go for it. Good luck.

Beware the Ontario Municipal board. Here a developer bought a historic site (a battle site during the 1812 war with the US) and is planning to build a high rise apartment block there.
Both the city and the local community objected, but were over-ruled by the OMB.

The OMB is populated by pro business individuals!

Im thinking you're right, wildie.

I just got the environmental reports from the gravel pit's lawyer. I dont understand a word.

I did notice that they observed birds there and did not mention the pair of eagles that I see often.

I guess Im going to have to talk to my neighbours and see if we can band together - maybe get our own report done.

iam feeling alone and scared.

I don't blame you for feeling alone and scared. All who face battling against big brother corporations and city all feel that way.

Takes a lot of time and organizing to take them on, without knowing ahead of time if it will work or not. But, it must be done.

If there is anything I can do let me know, I am an old hand at demonstrations, sit-ins and taking on city hall.

One can only try to correct the situation just because it is the right thing to do.

The EVENTUAL result of a gravel pit is often a very nice lake or pond. The problem is that EVENTUAL is a slippery word.
Any guess on the lifespan of the digging, angora?
