Nine Must-Do's Before a Long-Haul Flight

If you don't take long-haul flights very often, everything about the experience can seem intimidating -- the interminable hours aloft, the sketchy choice of seats, choosing an airline you know nothing about, wondering if and how well you will be fed, dealing with boredom, and more. And then there is of course pricing, which can put you back on your heels within seconds of clicking "Search for Flights."

All told, a long-haul flight can be the most physically and financially demanding component of travel to faraway places. To help you keep long-haul flying from becoming long-suffering, here are nine tips to consider before booking your next big international flight.

Also, many good other references

The concept of a 30 hour flight makes the idea of a single bullet in the chamber of a Smith and Wesson sound appealing.

After enduring my last trans Atlantic flight, I have never flown in a commercial aircraft again.
I used to enjoy flying in the military, parachute and all. However, emulating a sardine in a tin can isn't what I consider a fun time!

Living in Montreal, it is a shorter flight to Paris or London than to Vancouver. One time flying to Vancouver was enough, next time I drove and enjoyed the going, the coming back was not so good but that was lack of planning on my part.

I've done long hauls from Toronto to east Asian destinations. In addition to what has already been mentioned there is the matter of the brain feeling like porridge for a few days due to jet lag.

We always break up a long flight and stop at a destination to rest up. When we flew to New Zealand, we stopped in Fiji for a week. Did not seem so bad. Another long flight was a stopover in Hong Kong. ... Flew to England direct ... a bit tiring but not intolerable.

Long hauls might not be so bad for Mini me. He has lots of leg room and a computer.
