Why must a patient have to go to see the doctor every time a prescription needs a refill? I am referring especially to RX that one has to take for life. Is there any reason why a standing order cannot be left with the pharmacist and the patient must be required to see the doctor every 4 months to review the condition. Surely, this would lower medical costs and move those long lines in waiting rooms quicker. I suspect this method we currently have is that they get paid for such a visit in which case I say, the doctors are more interested in making more money than they are in allowing more time in instances where a patient needs more than a 5 minute visit. I do not see this as pracising medicine but pushing people through like an assembly line .. the more they push through, the more they earn. My former doctor's earnings were $300,000/annually and I can see why .. I felt like a part on an assembly line - while still trying to discuss a condition, he is on his way out the door .. next patient please. How does that consitute good care?

DW's doc gives her 3 months at a time. The local pharmacy hates that because it only gets to charge the hefty dispensing fee four times a year.

We know our doc quite well and I'm sure his take on it is that he has to see the patient at least every 3 months to make sure the prescription is still suitable. Other docs here go shorter than 3 months and people don't like it. I heard one (also know him fairly well) in the hospital late one night grouching that "I don't want to make any more money tonight!" so I doubt if he is doing it to make more money.

I am diabetic and need various meds. They all have refills of 5X and have anywhere from 100 to 500 tablets each. I can see nothing wrong with that.

I get 3 months at a time, if the script needs renewal my pharmacist phones the doctor. I do not need any appointment.

I have been on the same medications for 12 years and they are working just fine having been checked during the first few years I was on them.

Phoning in prescriptions is not permitted by doctors ... I see nothing wrong seeing a doctor say every 4 months but do have a problem if I get a RX every month as it is a nuisance to have to see the doctor just for a renewal. Usually when put on a new medication, it is necessary for close monitoring but once it has been established the medication works just fine, then I see no reason to see the doc every month.

Faxing is permitted at least in Quebec and in Ontario.

It is not unusual here in Ontario for the pharmacy to phone the doctor to get a renewal.

Not so in B.C. I think each province has different policies or it may the policy of an individual doctor.

My pharmacy just faxes the Doc. if the prescription has run out. It's silly and a waste of time and tax money to see the doc. when it's not necessary. Blood tests once a year are OK for what I take.

My wife once commented to our doc friend that "some people are afraid of their doctors". He replied that they should be! He said drugs are very dangerous and a lot of people are injured or killed by prescription drugs. It makes sense to be cautious and check up on how they are working. Some people take charge and make sure they know about side effects, interactions and so on but others are very careless. My late uncle used to take all his medicine at breakfast, ignoring the "take three times a day with meals" instructions. Some take a few extra pills if they aren't feeling well. A doc who really cares about his patients will want to check on his work at least 4 times a year.

Only with patients who are stupid and don't follow instructions. I would find it insulting myself.

Shoppers Drug Mart announced that their new policy was that they would not ask doctors to fax renewals anymore. That from now on I must see my doctor for renewals.
I just ignored this directive and kept using their automated order service, as per usual.

Nothing happened, and I am still getting my renewals!

I switched drug stores because the service at Shoppers drugs was unreliable.
If I went in to our store with a new prescription I got a lecture about preordering. On a new prescription how would you do that. Its all right if you live close but we are 35Ks away so having to drive down the next day at the price of gas was unacceptable.

This is just one example of why I changed.

Shoppers once delivered the wrong prescriptions to me, and then delivered my prescription bottle with the correct label but the wrong pills in them. I never would take a chance on Shopper's.

I ASK for 3 months at a time AND 2 refills...boy do I get dirty looks from my doctor. Often he conventiently "forgets" about the refills.
Most doctors are good for nothing EXCEPT writing prescriptions and they guard this lucrative governmental requirement like a pack of hyenas around fresh meat.
