Mrs. Heat has invited a passel of her relatives, most of whom I like, but one that I can't abide, to stay for a few days.

So I am going to bugger off to Cuba tonight until they disappear.

Never been to Cuba, so it may be an experience.

I've been to Cuba twice and loved it there! Nice people! Nice climate as well!

I have always said that if Communism fell, I'd be on the first plane out, and then I'd buy a place to live!

Really wildie, I havent been. What's great about it?

I liked Havana and its old buildings dating back to the Spanish settlement. For a large city, I felt safe to wander about. It has hundreds of miles of beautiful beaches and hardly a soul on them. Its fairly large and has lots of places to explore.
Cubans by nature are a happy, friendly people and fun to socialize with.

They have automobiles dating from the 50s and its interesting to see cars from this era running up and down the street.

The downside was the dangerous rural roads. Potholes as big around as a garbage bin, And as deep!
I dropped the wheel of a brand new rental car in one of these and I thought that the front end would be ripped off!
Some Cubans approach you and ask if they can get to Canada, could they come and live in your house.
They think we all live in palaces.

Cubans are very family oriented and take good care of their children.

And if you need medical attention, excellent care is available and is not priced like it is in the US.

Arrived back about 8 this morning -- the original 11 pm flight was delayed until 4 am. That's the hazards of charter flights.

Over all, though, it was a pleasant four days.

On the flight to Holguin I noticed an astonishing number of guys in their 50s and older with bad dye jobs. Many of them could later be seen swanning around with Cuban girls half their age or less. Fascinating (and a little repulsive) -- they all seemed to be blue collar types who have stumbled on a way to have their own part time concubines on a modest budget.

Not sure whether they have convinced themselves that the girls in Cuba are attracted to Canadian guys well past their prime or whether they just don't care.

Cuba has to be about the safest place in the world. Your chance of getting into any kind of difficulty is close to zero, because it is, after all a totalitarian regime whose aim is to protect those tourist dollars at all costs.

The resort itself was very pleasant, well landscaped, right on the ocean, multiple pools, booze flowing 24 hours a day if you want it.

The food was actually much better than I expected -- lots of avocados, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, although not much variety.

I paid a few extra bucks to stay in a villa, and was glad I did. Much newer, more spacious. The tv channels included CNN, BBC and HBO, to my surprise.

There is also dialup internet available in the hotel lobby for about six bucks an hour, but it was truly slow and terrible.

I did manage to get through three books (one very thick and dense) plus read the latest New Yorker and Economist cover to cover, which may give you some clue about how lively things are.

Fuzzyo, I seemed to run into an unusual number of people from St. Catharines. :)
