I live in Ontario where you need to renew your drivers license every five years. All you do is pay a fee when you get your reminder notice. However, if you don't get a reminder notice and you don't renew your license and if you get stopped by the cops you get a 350 dollar fine. If after three years you become aware of the lapse even if you haven't been found out by the police you are treated as a novice driver. This means you have to pay a fee and write a test and do two road tests just like a new driver would. How stupid is this ? All because of an overlooked license renewal. Generally it is overlooked because the ministry failed to send out a reminder. Just a way to feed the re-test racket where a lot of people make a ton of money. The whole renewal system is nuts in my opinion. A lady on my street hasn't been behind the wheel of a car in 15 years but she renews her license regularly and is OK to drive but an active driver can't get a simple renewal without going through all these stupid and expensive, plus time-consuming tests. Government in action! |

Now try telling me this forum isn't being monitored by outside advertising interests. Your post garnered this one. MTO Driver Assessments License been suspended for Medical Issues/Alcohol/Substance Abuse? Re renewal after 5 years? Isn't that on your birthday? |

You don't see any advertising at the bottom of the page ever? What browser are you using? Internet Explorer or Firefox? |

Wow, you got an NZ ad. The adsensor is aware of where we are from! Of course, its script runs on our computers and sends a packet (containing our IP address in its header) to its server requesting an ad. |

I use IE, and I never see advertising, I am not the one who does the settings on this computer so I have no idea why. I noticed the same thing on another forum because others were complaining about advertisements there also and I did not have any. Have no idea why. |

The ad I get at the bottom of this thread is for CAA travel insurance. Makes sense. |

dogleg: This driver's licence scam has just happened to my friend .. she's a terrifc driver so the tests etc are no prob. but the worst of it is.. she cannot drive without a licenced driver in the car with her, just like a novice driver. Luckily she has a patient husband who is fully willing to go where she goes. I cant help but think of a single person, living in the country stuck with this requirement. All because they didnt get their renewal notice. Crazy. |

I wonder how much the fine is for driving without a licence. If it isn't too much it might be worth taking a chance. |

haili: As I mentioned in my msg the fine is 350 dollars. In Ontario this re-test game is nothing but a racket that puts tons of money in the pockets of the re-test contractors. I asked the Minister to explain why they won't just renew the license for an active driver with a clean record like you would renew anything --- like a passport or an insurance policy that has expired etc. Too hard for him I guess as I am still waiting for an answer. Could it be about power and money? Does this happen in some of the US states ? |

Angora: I hope they wrote to Mr. Chiarelli the Minister and/or Ms.Carol Layton the deputy Minister to complain about how irrational this re-test scam is. The sooner somebody puts an end to it the better. I have asked my MPP to get the Minister to justify what they are doing and to explain why an administrative renewal isn't put in place. He is sending a letter to him and will raise it in the House if necessary. Just more government idiocy! |

If you are not licenced, the insurance company won't pay, in case of an accident! That could be very expensive! |

I don't think I've renewed mine in well over ten years. Carumba! I doubt if I could pass the written test because I haven't a clue about the metric system. I tried to take it when I was getting my GED but no way Jose ...! question.gif |
