This one bugs me no end. I am going to get the type of insurance that protects pedestrians against accident. I know I can buy this to insure against damages from motor vehicle accidents but will have to see if it covers incidents on pedestrian walkways that are now infested with bikes and the motorized seats elders ride.(whatever they are called).

Kids whizz by at speed and elders take all the room with their units as they are not allowed on the road. Leaves me little room for walking except in the street. Some days it's pretty nuts out there.
If I am ever forced to ride my bike on a walkway and I see a pedestrian approaching, I stop when we meet and keep still until the rightful user of the side walk passes me.

The opening of the article does go a little further than I ever would but I have told more than one to "get a bell' so that at the least they can warn of their approach.

I'm deeming September "Slap a Sidewalk Cyclist Month," and you can celebrate by giving the next pedestrian-on-wheels coming at you a good smack upside the head.

Now, there are more and more of the electric scooters that drive on the roads (like a bicycle) at low speeds that require NO INSURANCE! That's what people who are contemplating buying one tell me and I respond with , 'not yet'. When accidents from these uninsured vehicles start to mount I'm pretty sure that insurance will be a requirement for those in the future, too. How many people will get hurt before that happens?
I wonder if they are insurable now?

Anyway, I try to make for a fast moving target and don't get in their way, when I can hear them coming that is!

They should have and use some kind of bell or warning devices.

They should have and use some kind of bell or warning devices.
They should use their head instead.

Sidewalks are not made for people 'whizzing' along.

It's against the law to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk in some cities.

The by laws are designed to allow kids to ride their tricycles and smaller bikes but not adult size bikes. They are supposed to use the road and are supposed to have the same rights as any other vehicle.

Its my observation that its males between the ages of 14 and 30 that are the worse offenders of not having concern for other users of the walkways.
I would suggest that males in this range would be banned from sidewalk use, all others would be allowed.

Bicycle lanes next to the sidewalks will solve that problem nicely. Our city has bicycle lanes and they work very well. It is pedestrians that irk me when they do not use a proper crosswalk and dart right in front of a car or huge semi truck when they could have waited until that vehicle passed as there was nothing behind.

I have always wondered why bike lanes were not put in beside sidewalks. Would be safer for everyone.

Bike/scooter lanes. There are a lot of elderly people also driving on sidewalks as they are legally supposed to do!

In my fair city, bike riders on sidewalks face a fine of $130 if charged. The police rarely ticket anybody, as a fine of this amount is considered to be unfair.
IMO if the fine were reduced to $25 or $30, just enough to be a nuisance, the police would be more likely lay a charge.
