Ever since this problem evolved with my land lord allowing some one into my place. He is making my life pure hell! He knows that I know it was him or someone he allowed to stay in my place. Each time I turn around something else is askew! The VOIP modem to my phone some how is broken. I have been making calls from my computer with G-mail Tonight he sent me an email telling me tomorrow he is cutting the internet and TV. I was talking to hubby tonight there he was standing outside my door yelling Alli Alli I need to speak to you. I was furious because he was deliberately doing this as he can hear me talking. Hubby asked me in French why was he deranging me.. I called the LLTB they said there was a form to fill out, the police tell me it may be impossible to prove it was him.... yet all the evidence points to him. He had 3 young women upstairs Friday night the recycling bin is full of wine bottle liquor bottles.. It's so disconcerting having to live like this always tense anxious. I really haven't had a good nights sleep. It was my birthday Sat my oldest son wanted to take me out for dinner. I wouldn't go because I was worried he would be back inside I have missing mail One letter in an entire month? My missing toaster, a ring that was custom designed for me by my late ex hubby. My son's wallet disappearing money from my file box. Too many things and now he wants to cut the TV & Internet.... Any suggestions ideas would be most appreciated. |

Do you have a lawyer? Can your son stay over with you? What is his justification for cutting off the internet and TV? Edited by FuzzyO, Oct 16 2012, 02:40 PM.

Do you have a friend you can stay with, can you just move your stuff into a storage unit and get out of there? That would remove the stress of the landlord on your back while you look after moving back to France. If you can I would go to a lawyer and have a letter sent to him, he is harrassing you. |

Sounds like a place to get away from ASAP and deal with it from a distance. You've registered complaints with police and LLTB. Save any documentation re: cutting off services or anything else. Carry thru and finish whatever you have to do with that but get out. It is not worth your sanity to try to live there anxious all the time. Get out for your peace of mind and health. See your doc to document the stress, as well. |

In Ontario, when I was a landlord, I had to give 24 hours notice that I wished to enter the premises. I have no reason to believe that this has now changed! How this law is enforced, I'm unsure, but a lawyer would know! You may have to initiate a lawsuit, suing for loss of privacy. Re, the internet, does he supply this as part of your lease? If so, he would be breaking the lease and would be liable for damages, I would say! However, if it isn't written into the lease, then it would be difficult to claim damages in court! Here's a link to the Landlord/Tenant act that you can read, that may give you some insight on your rights! http://www.ltb.gov.on.ca/en/Key_Information/STEL02_111232.html Edited by wildie, Oct 16 2012, 03:50 PM.

Alli - go out and buy a lock or locks and you and son install it/them on your door, and do NOT give him a key. You are going to be there only another week or two, so by the time he can take any legal action, you will be back in Paris. In the US, the landlord is legally entitled to keys, but what the heck - you are leaving anyhow. The ONLY reason to play nice with him is your security deposit, but chances are - given what you have told us, you won't be getting any of it back anyhow. When DH and I rented a property between the time we sold our home and moved here, we also had a landlord from hell. We knew even if the house was pristine when we left, we would never see a penny of our security deposit, so we didn't pay the last month's rent. I figured the security deposit would more than make up for it. I would do everything I could to drive HIM nuts...make it a game for you and son so it is fun. and when you do leave for good, do NOT clean the apartment and just as you lock the door to which he does not have a key for the last time you can throw the keys away at the airport, turn on the water in the bathtub, sinks, etc. and leave them running! and smile the entire flight back to Paris.... |

BJ -- I think you would be the wrong person to to piss off. biggrin 04 You're undoubtedly right about the locks. Good advice. No such thing as a security deposit in Ontario. They're illegal. You just pay your last month's rent in advance. This landlord sounds like a cretin. |

I have NEVER allowed any of my landlord to have the keys to my apartments going back to 1968. First order of business when I move in is to switch cylinders. I keep the old ones to put back in when I leave and I take my cylinders with me. Newest apartment (co-op) I left management with the master key and installed my own dropbolt 12 inches up. I've gotten good at this so I don't need a locksmith. My God, when couple break up they don't trust their exes...who in his right mind would ever trust a stranger, much less that blot on humanity called THE LANDLORD. Remember too, if you leave the old locks, not only does your LANLDORD have a copy of your keys but all the previous tenants who have ever lived there. Edited by Trotsky, Oct 17 2012, 12:27 AM.

There are some weird tenants also. I had one paint my kitchen with kelly green car paint. He and his wife thought they were doing me a favour as I would not need to paint again. They were correct, we had to take everything down to the 2 x 4s, even the floor as they did not know how to wash a floor. We never bothered them, we were out of town. Have to say we successfully sued them for damages and for all legal costs including staying in a hotel while we did repairs. Had to nicely harass my present landlady to do minor repairs, 3 weeks later all is well and, she never bothers me. I have installed a small alarm that you flick on and it rings very loudly if the door is opened. Alli, get a chain lock that you have to open and close with a key. If he wants to get in when you leave to go out the chain will be broken, you only have to call the police to report a breakin. The alarm will permit you to sleep as it is very loud if the door is opened. They also can be set on windows. |

I insist that tenants do no painting and attempt no repairs, because they invariably make an expensive mess. Much better to get the pros in, and pay them. |

Like me, Alli resides in a basement apartment, and in some cases one cannot lock their door. In my case the breakers, furnace and hot water heater are accessed through my apartment so if something went wrong with one of them, and I was away with my door locked, they would be SOL. While I live with family, I pay the going rate, and through checking in the paper, it seems Internet and cable are usually included which I believe is because one cannot claim their rent as the landlord is likely not doing so. Take care, Pat |

I don't know the laws in Ontario. In Quebec there has to be two doors, and a certain square window surface for each room as well as ventilation fans in bathrooms and kitchens. I just know that someone I met in London had a fine levied because her basement apartment did not meet standards. They said if an immediate family member lived there it was OK but in her case it was illegal for anyone to sleep there. |
