Thanks, that's a good list. A lot of people don't know there is a best before date on a lot of spices. We bought a new revolving spice rack, complete with spices, to fit on our pantry shelf about 3 yrs ago. We don't use a lot of spices on things, but occasionally we will get brave and actually try a new recipe. The first time we used the paprika 2 yrs after we bought it, I undid the protective seal, and the rancid smell was overwhelming, a couple others got tossed in the garbage as well. It might be a good idea to check your spices once in a while to make sure they are still good. |

Good list Toodles. Good idea to check spices. I find it best to buy small size jars. Especially ones that are rarely used. |

My daughter has one of those vacuum sealing machines. She takes her herbs and spices and dumps them in a bag, seals it and labels it. She says she saves buying new as in a vacuum they last much longer. |

On the other hand, I don't believe those reports that tell us to dump and replace all our spices every few months. I try to replace mine slowly. When I go to bulk barn, I buy small amounts of a few and dump the old. I find that cinnamon, cloves and oregano seem to go on forever. Paprika however, is only colored powder after a while. |

I have a cabinet full of spices and herbs. There is rarely anything I cook without spicing or herbing it. BTW nutmeg is wonderful with most vegetables. To keep things fresh, I freeze my spices etc and bottle them as I go along. Seems to work. Things like garlic and ginger I prefer to use the actual product and stuff that I grow in my garden in the summer like basil. To me it is a wonder how an herb can make a virtuoso dish from a pedestrian one. :) |

I have inherited my late wife's stock of spices. There is likely all the spices mentioned, but I have no idea how to tell if any are any good? Maybe I should trash them all and start over? |

take a pinch of the herb or spice between yr thumb and forefinger and rub them together while smelling them. If there is a relatively strong odour of the type of spice then it is still powerful enough to add taste. |

A friend of ours has a beach house on Fire Island with a walk-in closet. You guessed it...for spices. |
