Canada’s long-delayed new electronic passports will feature extra security embedded into watermarks of historical and sports scenes as well as a computer chip and a five- or 10-year option.

Foreign Minister John Baird unveiled the new images for the now-blank inside pages of Canadian passports Friday at a mid-morning news conference.

“The new ePassport will be more reflective and representative of who we are as Canadians,” he said.

The images range from the Grey Cup and Stanley Cup superimposed over children playing pond hockey to Halifax Habour to a Prairie scene to the Fathers of Confederation.

The ePassports will also include a computer chip, technology already used in 95 other countries.

One of my more clueless days .... I left out the link:

I posted this mainly for information purposes, and do not have a lot to add. I think a 5 year passport will suffice for me when it is time for renewal in 2014 (that is if I renew).

Take care,
Pat.

Our passports already have the chip embedded, and all of the 48 pages have a specially printed series of historical scenes and security marks throughout. The cover is black, with the NZ coat of arms and the Silver Fern outlined on the front edge and repeated in reverse on the edge of he back cover. They are also bilingual English/Maori on all pages. New Zealand Passport - Uruwhenua Aotearoa. I've had quite a few conversations with people, while waiting in airport/customs queues, admiring them and asking for a closer look.
They are only for 5 yrs though.

Thank you for that, goldengal. Our passports expire in Dec./12 and about two minutes ago I told my husband that we needed to renew them as soon as we get home from this trip! -- That was timely. The ten year period sounds good to me, as I am hoping to be able to travel for awhile yet.
