“What a sad era when it is easier to smash an atom than a prejudice.”
¯ Albert Einstein

“There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.”
¯ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“Someone has said that it requires less mental effort to condemn than to think.”
¯ Emma Goldman

“However modest one may be in one's demand for intellectual cleanliness, one cannot help feeling, when coming into contact with the New Testament, a kind of inexpressible discomfiture: for the unchecked impudence with which the least qualified want to raise their voice on the greatest problems, and even claim to be judges of things, surpasses all measure. The shameless levity with which the most intractable problems (life, world, God, purpose of life) are spoken of, as if they were not problems at all but simply things that these little bigots KNEW!”
¯ Friedrich Nietzsche, The Will to Power

“Bigots see something they expect and then they stop thinking about what is in front of them. It's probably how they got to be bigots in the first place.”
¯ Jim Butcher, White Night

"As a Jew I am aware of how important the existence of Israel is for the survival of us all. And because I am proud of being Jewish, I am worried by the growing anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism in the world."
Steven Spielberg

"The paradox of anti-Semitism is that it is invariably up to the Jews to explain away the charges. The anti-Semite simply has to make them."Jack Schwartz

"Anti-Semitism is a horrible disease from which nobody is immune, and it has a kind of evil fascination that makes an enlightened person draw near the source of infection, supposedly in a scientific spirit, but really to sniff the vapors and dally with the possibility. "
Mary McCarthy

Bigotry in any sense of the word harms the peace of the world. I have friends on both sides.. One of my lovliest friends that I met through our Breast Cancer Blogging invited me to come visit her in Jerusalem..... I never made it RivKa died almost two years ago... We we going to side on a hillside listening to Opera in the Park ..

I have relatives by marriage in Congo.... War is almost imminent again. I sit day after day reading news reports The rebels M23 are 15 miles from outside a large strategic town of Goma, thousands are fleeing it will be a bloodbath.

I wish one day we could turn on the news and there wouldn't be one report of bombings killings massacres carnage, threats, harrassment, racisim bigotry , name calling, murders .. just one day out of all these days... But that would take a perfect world, we are humans we don't believe in perfection...... :sigh:

:good post: Alli. I hope your DH is safe, as I hope is the grandson of another WWS member who was called up for duty in Israel and Darcie's grandson in Afganistan.

Every time I read about what is going on in Kaduna, Nigeria, where we lived, with the fundamentalist Muslim sect killing not just Christians and animists but other insufficinetly devout Muslims, where as the only Jew in all of northern Nigeria, I was greeted so warmly and treated so well and welcomed to attend classes at the University of Zaria - the oldest Islamic lawschool in the world, I feel like the world would be a far better place if religion wasn't a tool of those who seek power.

and from my favorite author, Salman Rushdie:

Quote:

The fundamentalist seeks to bring down a great deal more than buildings. Such people are against, to offer just a brief list, freedom of speech, a multi-party political system, universal adult suffrage, accountable government, Jews, homosexuals, women's rights, pluralism, secularism, short skits, dancing, beardlessness, evolution theory, sex. There are tyrants, not Muslims.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said that we should now define ourselves not only by what we are for but by what we are against. I would reverse that proposition, because in the present instance what we are against is a no brainer. Suicidist assassins ram wide-bodied aircraft into the World Trade Center and Pentagon and kill thousands of people: um, I'm against that. But what are we for? What will we risk our lives to defend? Can we unanimously concur that all the items in the preceding list -- yes, even the short skirts and the dancing -- are worth dying for?

The fundamentalist believes that we believe in nothing. In his world-view, he has his absolute certainties, while we are sunk in sybaritic indulgences. To prove him wrong, we must first know that he is wrong. We must agree on what matters: kissing in public places, bacon sandwiches, disagreement, cutting-edge fashion, literature, generosity, water, a more equitable distribution of the world's resources, movies, music, freedom of thought, beauty, love. These will be our weapons. Not by making war but by the unafraid way we choose to live shall we defeat them.

How to defeat terrorism? Don't be terrorized. Don't let fear rule your life. Even if you are scared.”
¯ Salman Rushdie, Step Across This Line: Collected Nonfiction 1992-2002

My husband is safe, he's in Paris it's extended family on my son's side and on hubby's side.
I can say one thing though I am glad we are not living there my son would have been called to go into the army.. there is no yes or no option. I had been to Goma a few times a beautiful city nestled in between mountains where the gorillas are Virunga Mountains.

I had a friend that I socialized with for many years! Exchanged Christmas presents etc. We lived side by side and even built cottages at the lake together.
Never, did he ever make any comment about Jews.
Then one day, while my wife and I were visiting, he espoused his anti-Semitic views.
I was taken aback and said that my paternal grand-mother may have been half Jewish. Mostly speculation.
That was the end of our friendship! In fact, he sold off his cottage to avoid socializing with me.
You may be inclined to think that he was perhaps of German extraction, but in fact was a Scot.

BJ He was supposed to have left this weekend - Friday to be exact, things fell through and plans changed. I am actually very relieved because I was not keen on them flying over the country to various venues, planes there at times have a tendency to drop out of the sky especially when there is any sort of conflict. Some of the people felt with some of the groups coming to play in Kinshasa especially were there for Kabilia, there is such a strong anti-president Kabilia sentiment that I felt their safety was at risk. Things may change again I hope not I'm keeping my fingers crossed it won't happen.

Guess everyone wants their own Trudashians
I was surprised at some comments made by someone I`ve known well, last summer who made no bones about his anti semitism. I`ve never heard him put down or say anything about any other people or races. Although he does believe Israel has a right to defend itself, he`s not one of those who thinks Hamas can any thing they like, while Israel is held to a higher standard. I guess you never know.

I think this fits under bigotry

All round decent guys huh.. bet they had a fair trial hmmm doe this mean that Hamas has killed twice as many Palestinian Arabs as they have killed Israeli.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2235635/Gaza-conflict-Egyptian-president-says-peace-Gaza-imminent-predicts-lasting-ceasefire-begin-tomorrow.html
Six men accused of being 'Israeli spies' were dragged through the streets of Gaza City and executed in front of a chanting mob today as Israel warned Palestinians to evacuate some areas of the territory in apparent preparation for a ground invasion.
Witnesses said the six were taken to an intersection in the north of the city where they were summarily shot for providing intelligence that helped Israel pinpoint key figures in Hamas and the Islamic Jihad targeted by their warplanes.
