Harrassing Phone Calls

I have been getting weird calls, no one is there, a whistling, gibberish, ect. I called Rogers about it today and found out that they can look up the numbers that are calling me and the time. (That is a whole other discussion about gathering our private into), as well as the number that called. They confirmed my suspicions that the calls, both with ld and local rings are coming from the same place by someone using skype with a US number. Cute.

They offered to change my number for free and/or to add a feature where I can block all calls from private numbers etc. This would cost me $10 a month more.

I want to sleep on it, but I think I will go for it.

People who do this are sick, the police told me that there are many more doing this.

I wonder who I have annoyed. 017 biggrin 04 Have to say that I do have my suspicions.

About blocking csals: My new handset comes with a utility for blocking calls, at no cost. What happens is the phone will give just a single ring, pop up "call blocked" on my display, and that's it. What i wonder is what the caller sees. As I did not purchase this phone myself, but inherited it when my daughter decided to go strictly Smart Phone, I do not have the instructions. I would hope it tells them it is blocked, then they may give up. The really annoying thing is that the calls in question are not even for me, but for my grand daughter, who was living here for several months. I did tell her if she did not deal with it, I would give them her cell number, but do not really like to do that.

Nainai, I thought about getting something like that, but it does ring once and that is enough to wake me up as one did at 2:30 in the morning. If it just blocked without ringing it would be OK.

I can't take the phone off the hook or turn off the ring because I belong to a group that volunteers to answer for a shut-in (we are matched) if they have an emergency.

Why don't you just get call / name display ? We often get calls from numbers we don't recognize, we just don't answer them. They will go to our voice mail and we tell them to leave a message and we'll call back. They never leave a message so we never call back. If the caller doesn't have a name displayed or a strange number, most of the time it's a telemarketer or someone wanting something that I'm not ready to give him. You'd be surprized at how the number of calls diminish once you stop answering the garbage ones. Some calls have nobody at the other end, it's a robocall checking on the time you answered to verify you are at home during the time frame.

I dont answer calls that have a number I dont recognize or one I recognize as being a marketer but , as I understand it, Darcie's problem is that she is being awakened by the call whether she chooses to answer it or not. That happens to me sometimes too and is very annoying.

Roger's chequed my calls and found that these harrassing calls, which I have been keeping a list as to date and time, all have blocked number. It would be impossible to get a number even if I did have call display BJ
I don't use skype so I can't tell about that, it is what Roger's told me.

There are gadgets that will block numbers silently - much cheaper than $10 a month.
Several of them here: http://hqtelecom.com

You might have success calling the caller and stating your case.

I want to talk to someone I know who can advise me. I think I will get the 'manage calls' upgrade. Apparently I can tell my phone not to put blocked calls or private calls through. I am begining to think it is the way to go.
Delphi, what do you mean calling the caller, I don't have the number.
I looked at the items Delphi, do you have to have a specific number to block the calls, or can you just block calls that have no number?

Of course, no way to trace through Skype.
Worth checking with the phoneco to see if you can trade features. They usually give several features like call forwarding with your plan and you may not need one that you have. All of them are vastly overpriced so sometimes you can make deal or even get one free.

I forgot to mention the method DW used to get rid of a nuisance caller. She had a lifeguard's whistle by the phone and gave the guy an ear damaging blast.

Talked to Rogers, I have to take it all but they think they are being benevolent by changing my number for free.

BJ, for a charge you can make phone calls thru Skype. They've had that available for some time now.

Skype has been recently hacked .. see here: http://s7.zetaboards.com/Worldwide_Seniors/topic/8755445/1/#new I would hesitate using Skype as a regular phone carrier. Also, cordless phones are not private .. on the odd occasion when I was going to make a phone call, I overhead a conversation by strangers. I keep one corded phone just for private and sensitive calls.

I post alerts pretty much daily from reliable sources in the computer section - hopefully members here will check them out and be forewarned.

Calls that show private are often government or cell phone calls .. blocking them may not be such a good idea as more and more people are abandoning land lines.

I have Verizon digital phone as part of a FIOS triple play and it does everything except cook my meals. Blocking calls is simple and for no extra cost.

I decided to go for Roger's 'Call Manager', simply because when I talked to the expert phone man and then called Best Buy, who said that there is no equipment that will block certain calls or take messages without ringing the phone first.

I just do not want to be woken up first. $10 a month is little for peace of mind and a good sleep.

I do not use Skype, I have unlimited long distance on Fido.
