I have used a desktop for years and want to move to an i pad. What to buy is my question. Will I feel limited in any way by going to an ipad? Other than burning a disc is there anything else I can't do on an ipad? I have been looking at the ipad 2. Thanks for your input. |

Please - someone answer Dogleg!! What is the difference between a program and an App? or is "app" just the term used for programs in handheld devices? What can one NOT do on a Pad - either Apple or Android - than one can do on a computer? What can one do on a Pad that one cannot do on a computer? Do any pads have plans that allow one to use 3 or 4 g only when needed as opposed to wiFi? I am facing the very same dilemma. |

An ipad is perfect for email and surfing the internet, and, I guess, reading books, although I never do. It is also very good for watching tv or movies, storing and playing music and probably for playing games. I would not want to try writing anything very long on an ipad, and I never use it for online banking or financial transactions of any sort. |

Why not? and with voice recognition, couldn't you use that to "type"? |

Just much easier to use my laptop. And I don't like to get into the habit of talking to myself. |

All the I devices automatically switch to wifi when it is available. When you buy you have to choose once and for all whether you want the ability to connect to cellular service, $100 extra for the cell chipset. It can't be added later. Same for memory. I don't have the dictation feature - I have the original iPad and dictation came only with iPad 3. The voice recognition is done on a mainframe computer in California so you need a good Internet connection to do it. You can't plug in a memory stick. There is an optional camera connector that allows transfer of photos and a wifi gadget that does the same. The apps or programs don't work together very well - an app owns the files it creates so you won't be opening your notepad file with your word processor. There are exceptions; I think the Apple word processor and spreadsheet work well together and they are very reasonably priced. Copy and paste is awkward, requiring some fairly precise finger work. Limited memory in my iPad 1 means I can't be making a WWS post and flip to a website to copy the link - when I get back to the WWS page the post I was typing is gone. This should be much better on later iPads. Some things don't work - the emoticons in WWS for instance. |

Very handy on a subway. It will help you make fast friends...who will then mug you for your i-pad. It works the same way as Air Jordans.
Voice recognition capability still stinks and probably always will. Here's a hysterical 1.3 minute voice recognition skit by Miranda: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98SFgAp4ucg Edited by Trotsky, Nov 22 2012, 11:53 AM.

Apple - iPad with Retina display Wi-Fi 32GB - Black is what I ordered using my Travel Airmiles so am getting it for FREE - however, on 2nd thought as my order has not yet been shipped to me, I thought maybe I should order the one with cellular. Any thoughts on having the cellular added? My desktop is getting on in years and laptop is too heavy to pack around so figured an IPad would fill in between it & laptop.

That simple question doesn't have a simple answer! All these are computers and what they are capable of depends on the processor. It depends on its memory and it depends on its storage capacity. For sure these hand-held devices do not have the capability of the laptops that we commonly use. Their hardware is the limitation. I have an old laptop of 1999 vintage and it has more capability than the tablets of today. This laptop came with Win95, although it presently has XP. Tablets are best at portable communications. Spread sheets, large compositions and engineering programs (apps) are best done on a normal computer. APPs are in fact programs or as they are now known, applications! Microsoft has now adopted the expression APPs when discussing programs in Windows 8. In Win7 they were still programs, now in Win8 they are APPs, Same difference. |

I just bought the iPad Readville display and cellular capability it is wonderful noodles get it let cellular because that way as you're driving in the car if you want to know if your son's flight got into the airport which is where we were 15 minutes ago you can get I'm going to leave this like this because right now I am using the voice recognition I can't stop laughing I think the voice recognition needs some work for maybe it's just having trouble following what I'm saying because there's so much background noise here in the airport But I can't wait to visit my friend noodles in Colonna next year Seriously tootles cancel your order and get the one that has cellular capability the cost for 15 bucks a month can't make phone calls on it but you can use it anywhere where you can get cell phone reception and I think that is worth it it's saved Arlight legally owned this thing for about an hour and probably saved us some serious anguished twice already but being able to use this in the car. Did anyone understand what appears above? I didn't type that. I used the built in voice recognition. We are at the Seattle airport waiting for our son. On the way here, we stopped at the apple store and ended up buying the newest I Pad with retinal display. It can work on both cellular or wifi, but here in the airport where there should be wifi, it didn't ask me to switch. Maybe it switches automatically? What is great about it is the cellular costs only $15 per 30 days no contract. Buy it when y. you need it. |

Congrats BJ! I'm sure you will be happy with it. $15 a month is a deal Canadians would love to have. It only switches to wifi hot points it knows. Touch the Settings app, choose wifi and the wifi you want to use. If password protected, it will ask for it. Then it will remember and use it when available. It can remember a few of them. Toodles, get the cellular feature if you can and the $100 is not a burden. You don't have to pay the monthly fee until you decide you need the service. Also consider the iPad 3 with the dictation feature. iPad 2 and 3 can be updated to iOS 6. Mine cannot. |

I changed my order & added the cellular - iPad with Retina display Wi-Fi + Cellular 32GB (MD517C_A) A5X Price tag would be $720.00 if I had to buy it. I had to add another 20,000 points which I had and still have a lot of points left. It is still FREE for me. Yippeee!!! If I don't like it, I have 14 days to return it. Another new toy for me to learn. I must be crazy - at my age, I should be knitting afghans. LOL. |

Being my own driver, is there something to put it on the dash so I can talk away like there is on a GPS? I now use my bluetooth with my cell, so for a driver, what advantage is there? I sure to not want to be distracted by pretty pictures. I can connect to the Intenet on my phone if needed. I am trying to find a use for this for me that would make my life easier, haven't found it yet that I don't have now. So far I can only see it as a waste of money, I already have KOBO to read books. What place could I use this in that I don't already have internet access? 017 |
