I have used a desktop for years and want to move to an i pad. What to buy is my question. Will I feel limited in any way by going to an ipad? Other than burning a disc is there anything else I can't do on an ipad? I have been looking at the ipad 2. Thanks for your input. |

If I were in the market I'd be checking out the new Microsoft tablet, it looks pretty darned good. I do believe it has Windows 8 on it and from the ad it appears to have a keyboard, a big plus for me. I have an android tablet which is fun but that's all, I sure wouldn't use it for a lot of typing and so on. I do use it as an e-reader, otherwise, I regret buying it as it's really just a fun toy to have thing, I prefer the laptop. |

Help!! Anyone know how to find the instruction manual on my new Ipad with retinal display? Delphi - how do you know if cellular is turned off now that I am home and want to use the WiFi? I sure do not want to exceed my 250 mb for the 30 days. I see how to turn the wireless on, but not how to turn cellular off. |

Great question. With a .25 GB plan you will want to be aware of which service you are using. My iPad shows it in the upper left corner of the screen. It has the word iPad followed by the wifi symbol with curved waves showing the signal strength. If I was on cellular data, it would say 3G with a series of vertical bars showing that signal strength. 3G might be replaced by EDGE for a poor cell service or 4G for a really good one. Keep an eye on it when watching online video. If there is a glitch on the wifi it will switch to cellular data. If you don't know, find out what happens when you exceed your 250 MB. DW gets a text warning at 80, 90 and 100% usage. One byte over it triggers a $100 charge for the next 1000 MB. Not sure of that figure, and beware I am paranoid about cell phone companies lying in wait to get me. They do things you wouldn't tolerate anywhere else. Imagine buying a car, going to fill up with gas and being told you had to sign up for a 3 year plan for gas - only at that station - and pay for 50 gallons a month with ten times the cost of you go a gallon over. Likely there is more competition in the US so they will be better behaved. The best way to get the manual is in iBooks. Get the free and excellent iBooks app prom the app store. In IBooks wait for the "store" button to appear, tap it and use the search box at upper right to find iPad 3 manual. A search of the web will find an online one to view or download as a PDF which the iPad's browser should be able to read offline. Edited by Delphi51, Nov 23 2012, 08:09 AM.

Thanx Delphi. In my settings, I was just able to turn cellular off so I assume I am now just using WiFi....Of course I am on my desktop with the Ipad next to me. However, how do you find iBooks? or for that matter, any App? When it hit on "app" on the screen, it shows me a bunch of apps, but no way to search for others. |

Now I am wondering if I need the cellular with the IPad. I have OnStar in my vehicle which includes a hands free cellular service [satellite] and the only time I would use a cell phone is when travelling. At home I remain with a land line because I make long distance international calls and they are cheaper than international postage. |

Touch the "App Store" on the first page of the home display. You should then find categories, featured, etc along the bottom and a search box at the upper right of the display. I know what you mean, Toodles. I hate monthly bills. We don't have cellular on our ipads and just use it on our phones when travelling. The trouble is you cannot add it later. Worth keeping the Mifi or cellular wifi hot point in mind. It costs the same as iPad cell service and can be used by all your wifi devices. Not as convenient when travelling, though. |

In Win8 there are some APPs that are free, but Microsoft has decided to take a page from the Apple playbook and has decided to sell APPs in their store. It appears that we will be paying for APPs, more and more. I noticed that some APPs are priced for as much as $3. |

Tootles you must get the iPad with retinal display because originally we were not going to get the retinal display but the regular iPad doesn't necessarily have 4G capability - the one with retinal display has both 4G capability and voice recognition built in. I use voice recognition to type this reply. You do not have to pay for 4G capability if you're not using it you can buy it and 30 day increments whenever you want how ever the iPad with out retinal display does not have 4G capability |

I did order the one with retinal display and then added the cellular portion so that I have it should I ever wish to use it - just got confirmation from the Rewards office that delivery can be expected sometimes within 3 weeks time. My GPS has been shipped so it should be here anytime. |

friendshipgal and others: Thanks again for the input. I have been looking at pretty much everything that is out there and for my purposes I think the new Microsoft Surface is likely my best bet. The keyboard for me is important and it is quite a lot bigger too. Are there negatives I have overlooked? |

I'm leaning toward the Surface also! Here's an interesting article for you to read! http://forwardthinking.pcmag.com/none/305254-living-with-the-microsoft-surface-rt Apparently the Surface RT is not totally compatible with X86 software, so this could be a drawback. The Surface that is compatible won't be available until the new year. And it will cost several hundred dollars more!

Thanks wildie. The little Lenovo A61e desktop looks interesting and for only $400. Almost as portable as the Surface. I will read up on it. |
