A Worthwhile Charity

I am always leery about charitible donations because so very often the bulk of the money goes to salaries and self promotion.
But I sent a small $10 check to Wikimedia Foundation because I find Wikipedia the most useful NON-PROFIT site on all the web. I use it several times a day.

Give it your consideration also if you are so inclined.

Wikipedia is indeed worthy of our support. What a wonderful resource of information it is

If you don't mind me expanding on the whole charity subject, I find myself getting a bit jaded about some of them. I began giving modest donations at Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving to a charity that temporarily shelters the homeless and provides dinners on holidays. However, I get so many expensive glossy mail outs every month that I'm sure most of my donation goes to pay for these. I have asked repeatedly to be taken off their mailing list but to no avail.

I am seriously considering switching to the Salvation Army . While I am not a fan of faith driven charities, I like the fact that their money seems to go right to the people who need it most instead of to clever marketing.

If you don't want mail outs, steer clear of the Army. If they would just leave me alone, I would be delighted to send in a cheque now and then. But we must get 2 or 3 mailings a month. Ridiculous!

Greenleaves, for sure Dans la Rue is very worthy, used to go out with the van when I lived there and give soup and food on the street. It is one of the best programs for street kids that I have ever seen or know of.

Thanks for the warning about the army. I find that so annoying.
The charity I have been giving to , this month alone, has sent me meal tickets and yesterday a place mat.
Such a total waste of money.

A friend told us of a problem in her family
One of the problems with the mail outs from charities is that her mother in law was sending a cheque to everyone who sent her a request. She felt guilty not doing it until Laura explained to her how many she was sending. It was decided that Laura would monitor her mailings so that she only sent one a year to the ones she considered important. I wonder how many more seniors get caught up in this way of thinking.

My mother was very much like that Margrace until her dementia progressed to the point where she was not able to write cheques.

I made my donation to Wikipedia after reading this thread. What a shame it would be to pollute it with advertising. It is a fine example of what can be done when a large number of people work together.

You must live in the same area that I do. I often wonder if such things actually are done because they bring in more donations. I must be so, otherwise they are wasting the money with such mailings. While I don't care for their religious leanings, I think they do good work for the poor and homeless. We donate to them, also.

Other charities that we give to are the Red Cross and the local food bank.

We donate to a number of charities but prefer local and smaller ones. The Santa Claus Fund is a fav and the summer one for sending kids to camp. Also the Farley Foundation, our daughter's cat rescue.. Cat Busters, they provide tax thingy. Wildlife and conservation. Paget's foundation....stuff like that.

It's a way of trying to help out without expending the energy we no longer have to volunteer.

Guess everyone wants their own Trudashians
I wouldn't donate to Wiki mainly because it's biased politically.
I was looking for ways to improve my search skills and found this - note what it says about wiki

speaking of search skills, would anyone like to start a thread giving some tips ?
