Viber for PC or Skpe for my laptop?

I have no intention of getting a smart phone. If this doesn't work out, I may consider an ipod or one of its competitors.

What I really want to figure out is what to load on my netbook.

Skype has been around for a long time now. But you need to log in before you know you're getting a call.

From what I've read so far, Viber is for iphones, Blackberries and Androids, which are all phones in themselves. Which begs the question: If you already have a smart phone, why install viber?

Recently, there is Viber for PC that PC users can use. As far as I know, Viber is always on so your computer can truly act like a telephone.

Which is better Skype or Viber for PC?
Can Viber for PC make calls to Skype and landlines?
Can Skype make calls to Viber for PC and landlines?

Thanks

I haven't heard of Viber before. There is also Google Talk, which features a real phone number free if you have a US address.

Those who use Skype regularly just leave it running all the time. Of course you can't receive a call if the computer is off. No, the different services can't call each other.

The Magic Jack is worth considering. It has a small ongoing cost but gives you a real phone that plugs into the USB port, has a phone number and everything. I think there are people here who know about it. Kind of handy to have a second phone in the house for $20 a year including long distance. Of course none of them are quite as nice as a real phone for $500 a year.

My friend owns a Skype telephone. It plugs into any internet connection.
Its a stand alone unit and he uses it in Canada and the USA, and in hotel rooms with an internet jack. It can be plugged into a router, also.
No computer is required nor computer smarts are necessary either.

Sounds a lot like something I would love to own. How much a month does something like this cost, and where can you call?

There are many different options! http://shop.skype.com/intl/en-ca/phones/#/categoryid=2&sortby=3&subcategoryid=1|4&filter=&manufacture=&price_range=~100|100~200|200~300|300~&page=1

I'll see if I can find the service fee.

I'm committed to a FIOS triple play with Verizon for another 18 months so I have free everything for phone.
But that $2.99/mo unlimited for North America sounds intriguing for the future.
All our phone calls are made via land-line from home so that cheap Skype call might be all we need. We never call internationally.
Can I presume that you can place a Skype call to any phone in the United States whether or not your callee has a computer or has never HEARD of Skype?

Yep! My friend whose wife is computer illiterate, calls her family from wherever they are!
The Skype main computer knows where to jump off the internet and send the call out on the telco lines.

If you have a MagicJack, you can get an app for iPhone, iPad, Android called Talk Free. It accesses WiFi to make long distance calls. It will ring on incoming calls and every app acts as an independent line. It is free. For iPhone, it is in the Google Play store.

We use the MJ but have upgraded our iPad and Samsung with this app and it is very useful in areas that offer free WiFi.
