My apology, it really isn't funny, but it is. I was reading an article in Maclean's titled "99 Stupid Things the Government did with your Money", (page 16) Number 24 is this one: Maybe he's born it it: Not one to be caught without his game face on, it was revealed the office of Finance Minister Jim Flaherty expensed $130 worth of cosmetics for an apparent beauty emergency ahead of a televised budget announcement. Flaherty's staff scrambled to purchase concealer, blush, loose powder and shaving supplies to do the minister's makeup after a cosmetician cancelled at the last minute. For anyone wanting to replicate the look, Flaherty wears a combination of Maybelline CoverGirl and Smashbox. No link, you have to buy the magazine. Just dawned on me that it cost us $130 to find out that we won't have the penny any more. You really have to buy the latest issue as # 27, 28, 29 and 30 are equal if not better than the previous #24 Edited by Darcie, Jan 5 2013, 09:38 AM.

He must really like to play dress-up. Surely that money spent on vanity ought to come out of his personal money! |

All politicians appearing on TV have to wear makeup. They can all expense it because it's part of their job. Here come de judge here come de judge laugh123 laugh123 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hIcKkKID8k Edited by friendshipgal, Jan 5 2013, 04:41 PM.

Yes, I remember that Harper had a make-up artist that traveled with him but I don’t think the cost for this was ever revealedto the taxpayers. |

Oh dear!! how shocking!! laugh123 The President’s Makeup Artist Emerges; Mary J. Blige's Bowl Cut Is the New Bob By Sharon Clott MAKEUP • Lois Cassano, the makeup artist to every president since Nixon, claims they all wear makeup. Even Barack Obama. Her trick is to even out skin tone with foundation, concealer, and powder. "Presidents understand that being made up is part of the job," she says. As if the job weren't hard enough. [Allure/Daily Beauty Reporter] http://nymag.com/thecut/2009/01/the_presidents_makeup_artist_e.html Celeb Makeup Artist Tia Dantzler Reveals How To Maximize Your Own Lashes » By StyleBlazer December 13, 2012, 16:21pm If you’re in need of get-glam tips and tricks, help is here. Celebrity makeup artist, Tia Dantzler who counts President Barack Obama, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis and Kanye West as some of her clients, answered the eternal question of how to pump up lashes. http://styleblazer.com/110867/celeb-makeup-artist-tia-dantzler-reveals-how-to-maximize-your-own-lashes/ Men running for high office spend a lot more time — and money — than they'd like you to think on their makeup. All of them, at least, other than Joe Biden, a makeup skeptic who has only one rule, according to a makeup artist who worked with him: Don't touch the hair. A review of campaign filings and public reporting on how exactly American politicians put their faces on before television interviews and debates offers a glimpse of a part of the process most public figures (the men in particular) would prefer to keep secret. In a profession where the president shows off his basketball skills to Vanity Fair and where a leaked video of Senator John Edwards fixing his hair was a major political blow, they are less than eager to talk about their personal grooming routines. For a March 23rd appearance at the Wynmoor Village retirement complex in Coconut Creek, FL, the Vice President only allowed Oscar to apply concealer and a little powder, and “didn’t want [her] to touch his hair," she said. Biden, who “was really sweet and personable,” hired Oscar to come to him from where she was based in Boca Raton. Because of Secret Service clearance regulations, she “could only bring in what she needed.” The expense was listed on the Obama campaign's Federal Election Commission report under "Decorations," and totaled $250. And while makeup application for male politicians may still be under the radar, it’s not exactly a secret. According to a 2007 Politico article, Romney spent $300 on makeup applications that year (listed on the FEC reports as "communications consulting"). And in the spirit of “People” covers the world over, there’s even a Facebook group called “See UNSEEN Photos of Barack Obama WITHOUT Makeup ON!”. http://www.buzzfeed.com/alannaokun/how-the-candidates-put-their-faces-on |

I don't care what men use makeup, so long as it is from their wallets and not the taxpayers. Just a question, do the women charge the taxpayer for their makeup? Toodles do you know? |

Must've been a slow news day cos that little tidbit was from 2008. Anything to be spiteful and dig up possible dirt I suppose. If makeup can be attributed directly to the job then it can be expensed, depending on the company policy I suppose. I doubt it can be written off for tax purposes though. Politicians (and anyone on TV) normally don't have to expense it because there is a cosmetician provided. In this case she didn't show up for work. |

That's only your opinion. If a company agrees to it and allows it then it's right. |

It was a matter of public record, she was shown travelling with Harper on his overseas trips. I doubt many were shocked by it. Politicians wearing makeup for TV is the Holy Grail after Nixon refused in his debate with JFK. If Lois Casino does Obama’s make up, she must do it for free since she is not on the White House Staff Salary disclosure report. The last salary she drew from the White House was in 2008 during the Bush Administration. Can’t find Tia Dantzler on the White House staff either? All magazine and TV stations have make-up staff available, I have no doubt that Obama is touched up for magazine shoots and TV appearances but an on-staff make-up staff artist has not come forward. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/opinions/graphics/2008stafflistsalary.html http://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/disclosures/annual-records/2012 I couldn't see any pics of Obama on the facebook page but chances are they were photoshopped just as this one. Posted Image Actually, it wasn't a slow news day, and it really doesn't appear to be an effort to be spiteful or dig up dirt. Looks more like a public service announcement for people who do not closely follow all of the programs and special interest groups that get government dollars.

Did anyone else watch WKRP years ago? One classic episode was the station owner entering politics and engaging in a televised debate in full makeup. It turned his face bright red. The entire episode was a hoot but that image stands out for me. |

When I was present at the press conferences of the B.C. Government not one minister ever used makeup, the TV company may have brushed powder on their noses and faces so the glare was not there. When did our politicians become so vain? I just wonder when they started charging us taxpayers for it. |

It's not about women that was funny but about men that the post ridiculed Flaherty for using makeup - nothing was said it was paid by taxpayers.. Women in politics would get the same perks. Bitsy re Obama this should answer your comment that his make up was not for free & was in my previous post:

If you read my original post you would see that he charged the taxpayers $130. The title of the article in my original post is: 99 Stupid Things The Governent Did with YOUR Money. I am Canadian and there is nothing I can do about American politics or politicians. Error, sorry Edited by Darcie, Jan 7 2013, 01:13 PM.
