A Friend Almost Fell for a Scam

An older friend and her husband received a phone call this morning. The caller said he was her grandson and he was in deep trouble. She said his voice was muffled and she said his name as in Is That You, ------? Then they had a name.
Please don't tell my Dad, he pleaded but "I'm being held in jail and I need l800.00 bail to get out. I'm really scared. My lawyer will arrange to pick up the money."
She believed it all but didn't have money in cash. She told them she would get the money from the bank as soon as it opened.
Then she decided she would tell his Dad as she was so worried about the grandson. She called him and he said his son was not in town. The Dad called the son and he was on a skiing trip, perfectly fine.
She was so stunned as they were so believable. I remember hearing about this scam before but never believed they could fool someone as savy as my friend and her husband who also believed them.
I wonder how they get the names of older people to do this. She's going down to her local police station to report it. Too bad they don't set up stings and grab these ----holes.

"in better shape than the squaw, who recently went off the gourmet hunger strike. "

When I was growing up I heard the word 'squaw' used only in a derogatory way as a word for an Indian Woman, by white men.
Apparently many feel that this is a derogatory term and one that is not to be used any more than the 'n' word is, today. Some still regard it as misogynistic and bigoted. It didn't sit well with me when I first read it here. Perhaps it wasn't intended in the way it came across.

Apparently many others think so as well. It is discussed here, both for and against its use.

"The word is offensive depending on where you come from, but 90% is probably offensive. The "s" word means woman in Cree, but I believe what everyone else has posted as far as different tribes.

For the most part though, when you hear the word being used it is from white lips and is said with either sarcasim or hatred. I never hear a white person who is respectful speak of that word when I have a lady at my side. But I have heard it when ignorance and bigotry were factors. I usually come off pretty harsh when I hear it directed at any girlfriends I may be dating at the time, whether they are present or not.

So yeah, it is a Cree word but in my opinion if you are not Cree, then you shouldnt speak it."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squaw
Squaw is an English language loan-word, used as a noun or adjective, whose present meaning is an indigenous woman of North America. It is derived from the eastern Algonquian morpheme meaning 'woman' that appears in numerous Algonquian languages variously spelled squa, skwa, esqua, sqeh, skwe, que, kwa, ikwe, exkwew, xkwe, etc. At present, the term is often held to be offensive.

Don't know how people fall for the "grandson" scam; when my granddaughter called me from out of town, and she really WAS in difficulties, though not in jail, she knew better than to ask for money. I would not send money under those circumstances no matter how dire it sounded.

And yes,the first thing I would do is cal one or both of the parents. THEIR responsibility, not mine.

I get at least 3 or 4 in my mail per week. Never had a call though
This was the latest one from yesterday.
Yet unfortunately there are those who believe these con artists because of fear and what ifs.

Not really. Maybe if they made the amount of money smaller, it would be more plausible, and more people would bite. Oh, why am I giving these people ideas?

#1 - why would anyone open an email from an unknown source? I do hope users do not click on any links in similar spam mail that is opened.
#2 - Is anyone here aware that by opening such an email or others of this nature, they have verified to the sender that they have a valid email address which can be sold to other spammers who will also send spam?
#3 - If any user has their mail preview pane opened they are risking infection. Close it and once mail has been downloaded & gotten rid of stuff such as spam, then reopen it for ease of reading.

Two people (89 yo man, 64 yo woman) down the block fell for it according to the weekly neighborhood newspaper. Caller claimed to be the granddaughter arrested in North Carolian and in need of bail of $14,700. They wired it.
The crooks feeling they had a live one, asked for another $3950...they wired it.
At this point, they decided to call the granddaughter who told them she had never been arrested.
They are out almost $19 grand.

Rently, I've been receiving phone calls from a survey organization. They want me to participate in a survey and if I'm willing to do so, to press '1'. If I wish to be removed from their call list, press '9'!

I just hang up!

Is this a legitimate operation or is it one of those schemes to set your phone line up to be a long distance provider, for Jamaicans?

Probably legit.

I get the same kind of message from a couple of annoying but legitimate companies trying to sell electricty cheaper than Con-Ed.
I press "2" to receive no more calls...after a few times it eventually works. (And then ANOTHER one starts up.)

But hanging up is a viable alternative, cannot gainsay it.

I had posted under "card skimming scammers jailed", but we discovered my mother's bank account had been debited 25.95 a month for several years now.

If you google VOIP Pro LLC you will discover that it has happened to many other people. It appears to be some communications company, but this debit was not approved by anyone that we know of. If you scroll down through the websites, you will see the complaints against them. We wonder why the bank didn't catch this.

I think the banks look for unusual activity. As this debit may, very well have been legitimate originally, there was no sign of change, so they wouldn't know.
Is it possible your mother signed up for a service and has since forgotten?

Like the insurance company commercial says sarcastically
"If you cannot believe what you read on the internet what CAN you believe."

"He's a French model I met on the Internet"
and this homely pile of a man walks over and says
"Bon JOOR!"

<I LOVE that commercial.>
