I picked it becasuse the requirements are a 300 W. Power Supply and DVI out. Do you think it will be any better than the Integrated Graphics on the motherboard, even marginally?

Do cards like this come with software or will Windows run them...will I likely be able to output the same siganl to 2 sources.

If you see any other <$50 cards with a 300 Watt spec give a holler.

I bought an ATI Radian card, from Tiger Direct at a bargain price. I was using XP at the time. Then, I decided to upgrade to Win7. When the deed was done, I found that the manufacturer wasn't interested in providing Win7 drivers.
After playing around for a couple of weeks, I found that I could use Vista drivers. This worked for awhile, then the m/b died. I bought another m/b from Tiger Direct and found that my video card wouldn't fit into the new board.
The new board has on board video so I use it. The onboard video is as good as or better than the ATI card.
So now the video card sits on the Window sill, unloved, unwanted and useless.
I would gladly send you this board, free of charge but it probably won't fit your board and sure as hell won't work with Win7.

The card that that Tiger Direct is offering is cheap, so if its life is for a short term, not much is lost!

No, I want 8 years from it...just like the computer. I wouldn't mind paying more for more zoftig card but all the good stuff needs 400 Watts and I have only 300. (What kind of safety factor do these power supplies have?)

What do they mean by a low profile card, wildie or anyone? Is it the height of the card designed to fit narrow computer boxes or is it a narrow card so that it doesn't, in essence, hog two slots?

If you require a 400 watt power supply, you can buy these anywhere for $20. They are easy to change!

My policy has been to keep plugging in stuff and if the p/s fails, I buy one with a greater capacity.

I don't worry about my stuff lasting 8 years! Mainly statistics say that I won't last that long myself.

I would be surprised if any computers made in this era will last very long. They all use Chinese capacitors and these seem to fail at an early age. In the 90s I never experienced a failed m/b but have had two die in the 2000s.

Sound quite logical, wildie. I am happy to hear that switching out power supplies isn't rocket science. I was frightened of a size differential with screws and supports all set by the computer box.
(Back at the old apartment the compactor area always had at least 5 computers a week for the taking...I should have grabbed a couple for PRACTICE switching out things, but I never had adequate work space.)

So with a video card that demands too much power, it would always be the POWER SUPPLY that fails and not the card? Right?

You never really know which straw will break the camels back. You may install the new card and motor along for a long time, then one day you plug something into a USB jack and poof everything dies.

Was it your video that caused the problem? Some would argue not. Sizing of the power supply is subjective. If you only have two drives the load won't be very great. However, one of my computers has a floppy drive, two CD/DVD drives, and sometimes two hard drives. Then, I plug in an external drive.
My p/S is only 400 watts, but seems to be holding up nicely.

I have never had a power supply failure damage any other components. Usually if it dies, its just the same as if you pulled the plug out of the wall!

Well I have only a single hard drive and a DVD-RW drive, some usually empty Flash Drives and a USB keyboard and mouse and motherboard graphics and sound chips. So hardly pushing the envelope.
I DID just read there is a way to turn off the backlit glow making the front panel look "SPESHULL"...perhaps that would save me a couple watts if I could figure HOW to do it.

As 95 year old puppet, MADAM, was fond of saying when she was warned of the dangers of a heart attack from having repeated sex with an 18 year old boy: "If he DIES, he DIES." (Same goes for my power supply.)

You know what I am seeingL RADEON chipset cards all seem to call for 400W, and GE FORCE cards seem to be 300W. Is that a coincidence, a sign of relative quality or just a mak of efficiencey (or it's lack?) Does high power consumption necessarily correlate closely with excellence in a video card?

This ATI Radeon card that I have has large heat sync and a fan to cool it. So, I would guess that it will pull a bit of power. Beside pulling power from its signal buss, it has a dangly down wire that plugs into power. Probably to power the fan.

You mean into a 110V. outlet? That would save the power supply's limited power supply. :snowflake: Not a bad idea for fans.

No, sorry to say I meant it plugs into a spare connector on the power supply! (12 volts)

After 6 weeks of use I absolutely LOVE this video card and I even got my $14 rebate.
Galaxy GeForce GT 630 GC 63TGS8HX3XXZ Video Card - 1GB DDR3, PCI-Express 2.0 (x16), 1x Dual-link DVI-I, 1x VGA, 1x HDMI, DirectX 11, Overclocked...$54. (300 W. power supply requirement)

I was a bit worried about the possibility of a noisy fan but this one is completely silent, just like the one on the power supply and the CPU. So different from my old Dell and older Proteva, both of which sounded like jet planes in comparison.

As of now, no more than simple stuff, but I just might dunk my toe a little deeper into gaming. Now at least I CAN!
