Immigration activists in Vancouver plan to protest what they say was a series of raids on construction sites by Canadian border agents in the region yesterday, which they claim were filmed for a reality TV series.

Construction worker Gord Beck says he was working on a condo complex at Victoria Drive and 20th Avenue on Thursday when armed border agents arrived in black SUVs.

Beck says they stationed officers at corners to keep people from running, and swept the site, top to bottom looking for undocumented workers.

"I've worked with a lot of guys with ankle bracelets and stuff, but I've never seen Immigration swamp a site like that," Beck told CBC News.

Mindy Shepard, who was working across the street at the time, said she was shocked to see TV cameras recording up to a dozen arrests

"It doesn't seem very Canadian. It's very sensationalized. I don't like it. It's just very creepy," said Shepard.

How sad that we have not only become creepy, but tacky and cheap as well as wrong to do this to humans.

I am disgusted.

Sounds very like the 'Dawn Raids' of the 1970's here under PM Rob Muldoon and the National Party.

This documentary chronicles a shameful passage in NZ race relations: the controversial mid-70s raids on the homes of alleged Pacific Island overstayers. Director Damon Fepulea’i examines its origins in Pacific Island immigration during full employment in the 1960s when officialdom turned a blind eye to visa restrictions. As times got tougher, that policy changed and also led to random street stopping by police — before resistance by activists and media questioning helped to end a policy which has had a long term effect on the Pacific Island community.

I do object to the TV reality filming, I think it is falling to a new low for Immigration. I wonder how this all came about and who planned and organized this.

I sometimes wonder at how everything can be globalized, a free for all for corporations, yet people are illegal.
