Will I live to see 80? (Here's something to think about.) I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, she said I was doing fairly well for my age. (I am well past sixty-five). A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking her, 'Do you think I'll live to be 80?' She asked, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor?' 'Oh no,' I replied. 'I'm not doing drugs, either!' Then she asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?' 'I said, 'Not much... My former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!' 'Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?' 'No, I don't,' I said. She asked, 'Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?' 'No,' I said... She looked at me and said, 'Then, why do you even give a shit?' |

Salt may be the culprit in some hypertension, but when I was in emergency with 225/I don't remember, they took blood tests and my sodium level was very low, both in my blood and in my urine. There can be various factors at work with High BP. |

The salt card is too readily played. I too have a history of hypertension AND a history of too low sodium. Why does blood pressure increase with weight? Excess fat deposits everywhere and part of that everywhere are the microscopic capillaries, and the tiny arterioles that make up the miles and miles of out bloodstream. The only way to get enough blood through the clogging system is to push harder...hypertension. Hypertension is a protective device to make sure the body is fed, but to listen to some doctors gas away, it must be made as low as possible. That condition is usually called DEATH. The way that my heart has been acting up, I hope I make it to Christmas. Edited by Trotsky, Jun 22 2013, 03:46 AM.

Wildie I don't eat any of their food the burgers are disgusting. I usually have a coffee. It was a woman at the counter waiting for fries for her toddler Darcie I realize that not everyone's Hypertension is a direct result from Salt, But there are some that should be careful with their intake because it does cause adverse problems.. |

It's amazing how 80 does not seem that old anymore, rather like 70 used to be. It is the people well into their 90s that amaze me. We have a few in the neighborhood who still shovel their snow and go for walks every day. I want to live as long as I have all my marbles (at least what's left L0L) and reasonably good health. |

Salt restriction is just too glib and simplistic. Yep, I always thought of 70 as AG-ED (two syllables) until March 31. :D |

Yes, my parents lived to 80 and 79.5 yrs. and were both heavy smokers. I have not smoked, but do have one or two health issues I am in the process of addressing - including atrial fibrilation. Of course nothing much can be perceived by us as being certain in this regard - we could end up under the proverbial bus tomorrow, or even today!. Edited by Changi, Jun 28 2013, 07:40 PM.

I am sure it has been mentioned in various threads before that too little salt is also bad for our bodies. Much the same as anything else, moderation is key. http://www.wellnesswatchersmd.com/feature_articles/sodium_levels.php
Take care, Pat |

I limited my use of salt since I was young after being told by a doctor to do so. Never smoked, but everyone around me did. I now have some copd problems but not a lot. In keeping track of my problems, daily, food intake etc. I have come to believe that the biggest problem with my health is my inability to recognize stress and how much it affects me. We need a lot more information on this. |

Alli, take heart. My mother is 98 and she has had hypertension for about 30 years or more. Maybe she has exceptional veins, or something. You just have to keep it under control. I'm expecting to make it to at least 100, since my gene's say so. Just wondering what I will do with all of that extra time!?? |

I have hypotension problems, and hypertension, it is a drag to try to balance it out. I also have low blood sugar usually after meals. Sure hampers my party style. |

Wildie, that doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun! My mother never complained about that, but she did complain about losing all of her friends and relatives. Her care home "inmates" (as she calls them) have become her family, but even they disappear eventually. 1r |
