I use Search from Address Bar...done it for a LONG time. FIrst order of business with a new computer, new OS, reformat etc. is to make GOOGLE my default search engine, set home page to "about blank," and "Allow searches from the Address Bar." It used to work fine: put in term, hit ENTER and voila, a Google list. Then a click on any item and check it out, usually worthless and then click the back button once and back to the Search results to try to find something better. After a dozen tries I usually had what I needed. Then I noticed some sites were reluctant to respond to the back button...required TWO clicks or the site keeps reopening. Then pretty much MOST sites needed the double click. Then some needed a fast TRIPLE CLICK on the back button. Now some simply will not go away without closing the search and starting over...a HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS. Last one I tried 5 fast clicks and no response...then I must have overshot at 8 clicks because both the site and the search results were gone. What's up? Anyone else have the problem? Is there a workaround? Does Google allow the same stupid shyt for searches directly through Google instead of the Address bar searches. Do all search engines, even the dreaded Bing, allow for web sites to stick like epoxy? Can there be some setting in Internet Options I don't know about? Edited by Trotsky, May 17 2013, 01:51 AM.

I find the fast triple click is needed on occasional sites, and sometimes, as you have noted, not even that works. The majority though are fine with the back button. I think it is site specific, not Google's doing. |

Disregard this......I didn't realize you used the address bar for search. |

I too use the address bar unless I want to use Bing. I also note some problems with using the back button on some sites, some won't let you go back at all, so have to start again. No workaround that I know of. I also notice that there isn't always a cache for some sites. |

What I DID find out is there is a way for Google users (presumably not through the address bar) to say to Google "Open in a new window" and set this as default...but you have to register with Google first and presumably google through their website. I have enough Google in my life. Another method is just to RIGHT CLICK on an item in a Search list and it offerers the choice "open in a new window" but, althought this works, it is a few extra steps. So I guess if everyone has noticed this annoying sticky feature to some sites, there's no sense getting myself in a dither about it. |

Take a deep breath & relax Trotsky .. I have come to rescue your frustrations. Took me a bit of time to figure it out and it is quite simple. When you have opened several pages and some will not work with the back button ... look just above your screen and you will see those page links you opened & that will not delete are lined up there. Your back button is blocked by them. Simply close those links by clicking on the "x" on the upper right of the link and the page you do not want is gone. If no links show, then the back button will work just fine. If anyone needs more clarification .. let me know and I will create the scenario and then do a screenshot for a better understanding. |

Okay Toodles, try this and tell us how it worked: I saw a frail Julie Wilson last night (at Town Hall) and wanted to know her age (turns out she is 89 til Oct.) so I entered "Julie Wison" in my address bar. Dutifully, up popped the Gooogle list. I like Wikipedia for most things like this so the second entry was the wiki one. I clicked it. Voila: Julie Wilson bio. Try it and tell me how you get back to the Google page, presumably to go to ANOTHER Julie Wilson entry? aside: Have you registered with Google, use Google Chrome, or have a Google toolbar...I do not thus I cannot select a default "Always open search items in a new window." Simple solution Trotsky. Use the AVG search engine instead of Googel. It does exactly what you are looking for. Just click on the back button and all the searches are still there to pick from. Google isn't the end all and be all for search engines. |

I'm a big fan of browser tabs. I right click the link and choose to open in a new tab. I have never used the address box for searching. I prefer a separate search box add-on. I'm still with google for searching and mail but I am getting a little tired of needless changes that interfere with my use of them. My Gmail no longer works in iPad's browser, for instance. |

I guess that's what I will have to resort to...it works the same from the address bar with the extra "open in a new window?" But, sigh, typing a search phrase into the address bar and hitting ENTER was so easy and then the backspace ONCE to get back to the search results to read another entry. So much less mousework and you don't get a dozen windows open when you need only one. Che sera, sera. |

Using Google, I was able to back arrow out of the Wiki entry on Julie Wilson and return to Google page where this was the third entry. Harvard Kennedy School - Julie Boatright Wilson ksgfaculty.harvard.edu/julie_wilsoný Profile. Julie Boatright Wilson is the Harry Kahn Senior Lecturer in Social Policy. . She is the Faculty co-Chair of two Harvard Kennedy School executive ... |

Thanks Bitsy...a good clue. And you are using Windows 7, Internet Explorer 9, and address bar searches? I am guessing no on the last. Let me try it from a Google Window. No luck: even going to www.google.com and searching Julie Wilson when I click on the wikipedia entry, no amount of back-spacing will get me back to the Search results.
