THe Tata Nano is a car made in India. It was rolled out with high hopes but sales in India have been disappointing.
The cars are VERY cheap and get 66 miles per gallon and have a top speed of 65 mph, fast enough for highways. Zero to 60 in 8 seconds, not much worse than my Hyundai Excel (my last silly car.)

Why can WE not buy them? The damn things are $3,000.
Are there political forces that are keeping them out of the United States and Canada from whom we hear so much bullshit about FREE MARKETS trumpeted hourly.
Does anyone know how they are kept out of Western markets?

That is a perfect car to commute in a city, the speeds on auto routes is 70 to 100 KM, so this car is perfect. The 66 MP Gal means less pollution as well.

The version sold in India would not come close to meeting North American standards.

I have read reports that a version of the Nano that would meet our standards would cost $6,000 or $7,000, possibly more.

As I understand it, Tata is focused on India first, other developing countries next and will worry about the developed world much, much later, if at all.

No, Campy, I have no secret sources of information. The above is off the top of my head, from memory. laugh123

What exactly would some of these "standards" that these cheap energy efficient cars cannot meet? Might one of them be a $15,000 minimum sticker price?

It's certainly wouldn't pass any 'western' consumer safety test.
Mr Tata has made his billions in serving India first ..... Ratan Tata

Safety?

Heck, some really stupid little things are considered U.S. roadworthy and available for sale:

Then difference seems to be that these messes are available at $16,000. Probably if the NANO quadrupled its price it could be sold in the protected U.S. market.

Why do you always have to bring me into the discussion?

It seems like you are obsessed with Campy as the Star is with Ford.

This vehicle is not a new idea. I recall the Isetta from Germany in 56/58. There was also a three wheel version (forget its name) but it was designed after the cockpit of a German fighter air-craft.

I think air bags cost about $1000 each and so do catalytic converters.
We see some Smart Cars around. Looks like they cost about $12000 or double that for the electric version. http://www.autoguide.com/new-cars/smart

Delph,

Tata is working on $10 airbags for the NANO.

Quote:

Tata Motors planning to launch a $10 airbag for its world cheapest car Tata Nano. This bag will be the world's cheapest air bag.It is also fitted to other mini cars.
Tata Motors is likely to install the air bags in the Nano's Delux version.Delux version of Nano have featuring like air-conditioner, music system and alloy wheels.

Air bags are helpful to passengers against serious injuries during an accident.

My guess is the U.S. government will dream up an endless stream of reasons to keep these cars from competing with the established U.S. companies.

Gotta also wonder why a car getting 66 mpg even NEEDS catalytic converters...they are for Hummers and Cadillac Escalades that get a gallon per mile and spew out half of it.

Good point on the catalytic converter! The car has a 600 cc engine, same as a largish motorcycle that doesn't have one. We are seeing some three wheeled motorbikes here; they must be priced like the Tata and drive somewhat like it. Two wheels in front, one behind.
