What do Canadians who have visited the store think of it? I have been in the store in Lindsay Square Mall now 3 times, and I would give it a 10 for spaciousness and cleanliness, and likely much the same for clerks ready to assist. Of course, there seem to have been more clerks than shoppers each time I have been there.

The one thing I noticed was that Campbells Tomato Soup was $1.77 for the 284 ml/10 oz tin. I am wondering if it was just at that particular store, but then again prices come down through a main computer I believe - at least at grocery stores. That price is ridiculous. It was low sodium though so wonder if that makes a difference in price - huge difference.

Take care,
Pat

Our downtown is now made up pretty much solely of bars for students, where there used to be everything from hardware stores to stationery. Tne few stores that are left don't even bother to stay open Thursday and Friday evenings any more.

I can't think of one store that is no longer in the suburb of Montreal that I lived in. In fact the Walmart was built in the middle of a large empty track of land and now there are at least 50 new small stores around. The Zellers is in the middle of a massive construction project for Target. All of the nearby mall is full, no spaces available for rent.

Are those stores primarily chain stores Darcie? There are stores around Walmart here: SoftMoc, Cotton Ginny, Payless etc.; all chain stores.

Kensington Market might be getting a new addition to the community but its residents are not on board with this neighbour.

Retail giant Walmart wants to set up shop in the historic neighborhood as a part of a three-storey shopping mall. The proposed mall, including the Walmart, would be nearly 130,000 square feet.

Kensington Market residents, visitors and shop owners are against the idea of a Walmart being built in the area. Some suggest moving it a couple blocks down.

“There are 100 other places that they could put that Walmart that doesn’t need to be close to Kensington and it has nothing to do with Kensington,” a resident told 680News.

“Each neighbourhood has got their own little flavour. Why do you want to bring something big and monstrous into such a nice area?” Another resident said.

While shop owners are concerned that the retail giant will have a negative impact on their businesses, some residents are worried about the amount of traffic it would bring to that part of the city.

“The bigger impact would be just more traffic and the impact on other small stores in the area,” one resident told 680News.

A petition has been posted online to prevent the re-zoning of the area, which would allow the Walmart to be built.

So far, more than 55,000 supporters have signed it.

The Ontario Municipal Board has previously rejected the idea of a large mall in Kensington Market.

One of the things that has not happened in our area is the closure of food stores. Here they all compete with Walmart prices and have generally a much better product. Just taking a glance through the rest of the store, the stuff they sell appears to be of much lower quality since Zellers closed.

When I was at the lake this week, and perusing the stores in Lindsay Square Mall, I noted 3 stores that are vacant. If Target is not a good enough anchor store to draw shoppers, this could worsen. The only other store, along the same line, is Giant Tiger, but they are not a huge store, and are a couple of blocks away.

I have never felt that Walmart (which has been endeavouring to get into Lindsay for many years) would affect sales of the specialty stores downtown for they are a different calibre. I am thinking here mainly of clothing. Someone who dresses to the nines is not likely to where George (Walmart label).

Take care,
Pat

I'm with you on that one Pat. I think Walmart low prices are highly overrated. Very often their paper product sales are not as good as what I can find in my grocery store. The one thing that is less costly is the higher end face creams, when they have it. In Montreal it was $9 less for a jar that a pharmacy or costco had .

When it comes to groceries, I went there while in Montreal, their prices were higher for everyting than the regular prices in grocery stores.

I think Walmart has forced some stores to lower prices to remain competitive, but now I don't see Walmart as any less costly. It is sort of a myth that is perpetrated by Walmart and a lot of people buy into it.

The Walmart proposed in Kensington is only going to be on the two two floors of a building. There will be other business in there too. Not sure what it would do to the Kensington area but I don't think it will affect the markets as that is where people like to go.

I'm not a big Walmart shopper, it did provide more of a selection for us when it came to town. I rarely shopped in the downtown area anyway as it's mostly junk stores and a few over prices boutiques.

I also find that Walmart has a good selection. When they first opened (not so much now) you would seldom find an item sold out. Their shelves were replenished quickly. Our Superstore (Loblaws)
is hopeless in keeping their shelves stocked.

Recently, while shopping with a friend, we went into Walmart and I bought a bit of produce thinking their prices would be lowest, as advertised, and nope. Their prices were beaten by lower ones at my local grocery stores. An affirmation that I am not missing anything much by staying away from there.

I think you Canadians are going nationalistic on us. We went to COSTCO and Trader Joe's in Bellingham yesterday, and usually both parking lots are full of BC license plates, but yesterday, I would say Canadian license plate made up fewer than half the license plates in each parking lot!

In the words of Monte Python...RUN AWAY.

I just bought condensed tomato soup for $.49 at ALDI's...I add red lentils and Indian spices and make a Mulligatawny. After I checked out I notices a big pile of condensed tomato "Manager's Special" for a quarter each.

And remember...this is MANHATTAN.

Every so often Wal mart puts Campbell's soup on sale for 49 cents. Zellers used to do it too but those days are done. Canned goods should be going on sale soon as they do every summer. Time will tell if Target does it.
