Target in Canada

What do Canadians who have visited the store think of it? I have been in the store in Lindsay Square Mall now 3 times, and I would give it a 10 for spaciousness and cleanliness, and likely much the same for clerks ready to assist. Of course, there seem to have been more clerks than shoppers each time I have been there.

The one thing I noticed was that Campbells Tomato Soup was $1.77 for the 284 ml/10 oz tin. I am wondering if it was just at that particular store, but then again prices come down through a main computer I believe - at least at grocery stores. That price is ridiculous. It was low sodium though so wonder if that makes a difference in price - huge difference.

Take care,
Pat

Why buy Campbells when you can make your own?

Soup takes no time to make and costs next to nothing.

I make many many homemade soups, and in fact for the last month and a half had a different soup each day for lunch in order to deplete the selection in my freezer. However, I do realize there are many who either do not have the facilities to make soup from scratch (some use small hot plates), or they are too ill to do so. Must admit occasionally I do enjoy a bowl of Campbells tomato soup to dip fresh bread into, and use the cream of muschroom in many recipes. Please do not harp about the sodium as so far I have no problems with salt.

In fact just recently when visiting my friends at the lake, the discussion involved the lack of salt in our bodies and the ensuing problems. I think often we over do things when it comes to our health.

GG, you make some good points about tinned vs home made. Personally, I don't worry too much about salt meself. Cooking without it would be a horror.

It may also be the case that the very elderly prefer the taste of Campbells, because a) they are used to it and b) their taste buds aint what they used to be. My mother in law, who will be 100 this year, seems to prefer Campbells tomato to anything else. But she would exist on flavoured yogurt alone if we let her!

I must admit that for a long time I couldn't eat any processed soups. All I could taste was salt, for almost all of my life I have avoided salt on doctors orders. But I do put it on my home cooked stuff myself and I let my family flavour as they felt. Now campbells soup are palatable for me, I can taste the flavour. I do make my own soups thought most of the time.

Most of the soup I eat is home made but I like Campbells tomato and mushroom soups for adding to various casseroles and other dishes and as a change from my own home made soups.

I eat Campbells Tomato soup like my grandmother made it for me. Soup + whole milk + a big knot of butter. I like it that way only.

I also make a lot of homemade soups as I really dislike leftovers any other way. I also dislike the taste of salt which is why I dislike Campbell's soup as soup, though like Pat, I have used it in recipes.

In lieu of salt, I use lots of fresh herbs in just about everything I cook. We bought our house 2+ months before we actually moved here, and I actually hired a landscaper to put in an herb garden while we were still in Philadelphia because I didn't want to be without fresh herbs for even a day; and I wasn't. The perennial herbs she put in....oregano, chives, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, etc. she put in are still going strong and we have been here 7 years today.

Our coming Target store here in the Wack is still under renovations. If it is basically like Walmart...no I will not shop there.
The only thing I get at walmart is the cat litter 1089

I use lots of tomato soup in recipes and usually get the safeway brand.

I prefer Heinz tomato soup. There is cornstarch or something in Campbells that makes it less orange. I always used Campbells until I tried Heinz.

There are some bad canned soups out there but for me every meal does not have to be a gourmet delight. Sometimes I just want a fast bowl of soup and tomato hits the spot.

It didn't take Target long to register as 'lobbyist' in Ottawa.

Every so often Wal mart puts Campbell's soup on sale for 49 cents. Zellers used to do it too but those days are done. Canned goods should be going on sale soon as they do every summer. Time will tell if Target does it.
Do the EVER do it for any except Tomato and Chicken Noodle...the 2 that nobody wants?

We never have the good stuff on a super sale so for the better varieties we buy BRAND X.
