I think you have to start hissing pre-jump, and make some crashing noise, broken crockery in a tin or something, as soon as they hit the counter.

They are worse than toddlers.....we have a large linen closet in the hall, shallow with shelves, but about 10 feet wide with sliding doors. They always liked to climb in there and "nest" in the folded, previously clean towels, blankets, sheets, and pillows. This morning they seem to have discovered that it is even more fun to take things OUT of the closet. I will try to post a photo of what this looks like. Trying to keep them out of mischielf is a full time job.
Angora - I wasn't worrying just about our guests health, DH and I eat food prepared on those counters, too!

Any chance they will leave your lingerie alone now that they can do the towel toss?

My cats have always got on the counters and none of us have ever gotten sick from it. However, each to his own.

Try spraying them with water.. generally works.

Angora, why do you think I have water pistols in every room? Does no good at all. They jump away from whatever naughty thing they are into when we spray them, and the minute we turn our backs, they are back to whatever they were doing.

We have the sides our new sofas covered in plastic strips of tape that are supposed to prevent cats from clawing the furniture. The strips are white and look terrible, but the cats didn't claw where the strips are.....until today when Blue decided he had enough of those damn strips, and actually managed to pull several off the sides of the sofas. The problem is that the sticky sides stuck to him and he was howling in obvious distress. Took me at good 20 minutes to get the stuff off of him without shaving off his fur.

And don't bother suggesting trimming their nails. I wish I could afford the bi weekly manicures Red and Blue get!

DH has decided we should probably just take the sticky strips off the living room furniture and take turns sleeping on it with our water pistols full and ready to shoot. Errrr

bj: more on ammonia. My son's cat loved to sharpen his claws on the couch. My son pinned ammonia soaked rags on the corners of the couch. Guess what - the cat scratched and sat on the centre!!

bj I have/had no idea you had water pistols in each room. Maybe you should talk to your vet. or access vet sites. I am only an expert on my own situation .. you are the expert on yours.

We have had cats as a couple for over 30 years and our families had cats when we were kids. All rescues.

We have never seen cats behave like Red and Blue. They are cute, funny and very cuddly but I am as exhausted as I was when Gabe was a newborn with colic!

BJ: Cats don't like the smell of ammonia. Maybe a bottle of it on the counter would be a deterent?? I won't recommend spraying ammonia on them.
No, No, No...they confuse ammonia with urine and might decide you have moved the litterbox to the kitchen counter.
"Gee the soup tastes funny."

Suggestion: Put a door on the kitchen and leave it closed.
Same for peace in the bedroom: Close the bedroom door.
Same for bathroom: Close the bathroom door.

You really cannot give them the complete run of the house and then complain that they go everywhere.

Some people train pets, other people are trained by their pets.

WE have what HGTV calls an open concept house. Hardly any doors anywhere. Kitchen separated from dining room by a huge counter/bar....no place to put a door. WE do shut the door to the bedroom when they keep us awake.

You could always build them a nice guest house on your property which is 'cat proof' and put in upholstered furniture that they can scratch, counters they can climb on and plastic vases and flowers that they can knock over.

Then you could go visit the 'Cat House' anytime you wish and spend some time with them.

You also could put in an old dresser with lots of underwear in it for them to scatter.

Just a thought, maybe they would be happier just being themselves all the time.

I know, it is a desperation measure.
