Windows XP default browser: Firefox second browser: Google Chrome never use Internet Explorer Internet search on this message usually points to Internet Explorer. But I don't use Internet Explorer. It seems this message is in regards to the home page of Google Chrome. In my settings, the home page I've assigned and the web pages that I've asked to open at startup disappears. The settings work while Chrome is still open. But when I close chrome and open it again, my settings disappear. I've scanned and cleaned using SuperAntiSpyware but the problem persists. I'm currently scanning Malwarebytes. |

Go to Start, Control Panel, Internet Options. Check you settings there and adjust them how you want them to appear. My homepage is a blank page. I find that simple. With XP I think Internet Explorer is included in the package. |

Do you also see it when using Firefox? Can you tell if it is your AV program sending the message? |

I use Internet Explorer, and like campy my homepage is set to "about blank." It is the fastest load. I could instead put in any URL if I wanted. I use Win 7 but it was exactly the same for Windows XP and Win Me. Daniel, What do you get when you choose START>>CONTROL PANEL>>INTERNET OPTIONS? Edited by Trotsky, Jun 17 2013, 12:37 AM.

Daniel, I add the url of the page I want to open on the empty tabs at the top. I click an empty tab, and type in the URL of page that I want to open. They are there when I open and close Chrome. |

Chrome is aggressive in trying to get you to make a change for your default browser. Every time I sign onto G mail I get a message telling me that I am using an obsolete browser and that I should switch. It's probably your anti virus software that is sending the message. Campy and Trotsky: At Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, I see the homepage that I had selected. I agree that “blank” would be simpliest. But that’s avoiding the problem, especially if there’s malware that’s doing this. FuzzyO: I have no problem with Firefox. Except that when it gets frozen I get an unresponsive script message. Then I click on “Stop Script”. I then open Chrome and continue with browsing. I use Avast as my anti-virus. I don’t know if the “an attempt to replace your homepage settings has been blocked.” is from Avast or where. |

Try taking the default home page for awhile and then change back. I don't think it's malware giving you the message. |

Only Chrome affected. Setting works okay at first but doesn't save. It sure sounds like chrome is having trouble writing its settings into your profile in the AppData in your profile in your documents and settings folder. Does it affect other settings like showing the bookmarks bar? Saving bookmarks? If so, the cure would be to clear the old Chrome profile and create a new one. https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/142059 Another thing you could try and which would indicate the cause more clearly is to create a new user for your computer in control panel - users. When logged in to it, Chrome will create a new profile. Does the problem still exist? If not, it is surely the profile and the previous paragraph will fix it for your usual username. Out of curiousity, what version of Chrome are you using? Mine is Version 27.0.1453.110 m. Perhaps a newer version would fix your problem! |

Wildie: My version is 27.0.1453.110 m, same as yours. Delphi51: There is only one profile in this computer. Although everyone in my family has access, I'm the only one using it. It's a netbook, Compaq mini dv. Same with Chrome. No profiles set up. |

Did you try making a second username to get a second profile? That would confirm whether or not there is a problem with that Chrome profile. |

Hmmm? I have no problem? I'm using Win8. Perhaps you could reinstall it? If you do reinstall, make sure to get rid of the config files or the prob may carry over. Theres a possible that this Chrome version is incompatible with XP. |

Daniel, Don't look at it like malware but rather pushy large corporations trying to nudge one another out of lucrative business, something as old as the first computer operating system. There are a lot of "automatic upgrades" that have at the bottom a block that must be checked to AVOID making something your home page, adding a toolbar, or switching to a proprietary browser. That's pretty much why I stick with Microsoft and I.E., and Windows Live Mail, and Microsoft Security Essentials... all devils I know. The only change I make is to switch from BING to GOOGLE as my default Search Engine but even THAT presents problems because I must always search every update for everything to keep GOOGLE from encroaching with unwanted toolbars and it's operating system. I used to like a lot of chrome until the 1958 cars when I got tired of it. Of course BING sometimes tries to sneak back on. Every week there is an ADOBE Update that tries to sneak on a lot of shiny new chrome...I have a special stick that it beat it with. <ak47.gif> (Buried in Advanced Options was a choice I once stumbled upon: Prevent programs from suggesting changes to Search engines, operating systems, and home pages...someday maybe I'll stumble on it again. Serious use "about blank" for a while and see if it pleases you. Now there are also startup apps that look like Home Pages. I allow only ONE from THE WEATHER CHANNEL. SO my computer opens with a terrific interactive weather screen where I can see the map for my zip code, run it backwards or forwards, get data by hour, get automated warnings and when I click it off to get to my desktop I leave a tiny 2 mm icon on my taskbar with my current temperature right near the clock. It's the only thing I allow. Edited by Trotsky, Jun 18 2013, 12:04 AM.

* I use Avast Security suite and anything questionable Avast will place into the sandbox before completing the download. Avast will also block unsafe sites but not block browsers or homepages, etc. Free avast will not block homepages either. Trotsky ... Even using IE to download free software, addons will also download. If you do an automatic instal then you will have loaded the addons. If you choose manual instal, then you can eliminate the addons. If an addon cannot be eliminated and is pushed then it can be removed from the control panel add/remove. This applies to all browsers. If you always use the same thing for your homepage and it keeps changing .. then you can assume that your browser has been hijacked. |
