Yesterday I was in Sobey's Niagara Falls. I needed to pick up a couple of things for dinner. I had to stop at Bulk Barn they were both in the same plaza. I wanted some cheese as I was making Bruschetta on Focacia and salad for dinner. To my absolute shock Black Diamond Cheese was $9.59 for the 500 g package. I was stunned as the week before I bought the same cheese for $4.97 Needless to say I didn't buy any. I thought Zehrs was expensive, their prices keep rising on a weekly basis plus so many of the products have decreased in size. I have started to shop at Freshco. They don't always have everything I need but on the most part their prices are far less than other stores. I'm not a cheese eater my son is. I bought some goat cheese in a package paying $2.99 and a package of shredded cheese 500g for $3.99 A head of broccolli at Sobeys was $2.49 Freshco a dollar less. We go through a lot of vegetables as my son does not eat meat. I make less for myself I will have shrimp or broil a piece of haddock or cod. I really wonder how people can make their food budget stretch week to week when the cost of everything escalates to outrageous prices. I do like to make my own preserves as green relish, some jams But trying to buy good food is becoming more difficult. Especially when grocery stores rob you blind! |

Alli the only way I make it is to 'sale' shop. To do this I find my small car a necessary evil. I do need a small freezer as the fridge one is just too small for me. I find Loblaw to be the highest priced, then Sobey. This week I went to Freshco, and found that apart from Yogurt they were expensive. Example: one dozen large eggs at Freshco was $3.49 and they were dated a week away, at No Frills the same eggs were $2.68. I could go on and on. |

Yes, it is all about shopping for the loss leaders which I pretty much do all the time. There is no way I would ever pay the regular price for a 500g block of cheese although I must say even at our Loblaws the reg price is not $9.59 currently but rather $8.99. January thru April I did great at not stocking up, but find I am back in that mode again. My storage room is once again beginning to resemble a mini store. Just yesterday my friend in Scotland and I were discussing the price of paper products, and how they have escalated and one has to purchase them on sale only. Take care, Pat |

I like Freshco, great selection of 'ethnic' foods and you don't have to go through a pharmacy, children's clothing, etc. etc. etc. . |

I find my local Food Basics to have the same selection only less costly. The Hoisin sauce at Freshco was $4.39 and the same make and size was $2.99 at Food Basics. |

I like Food Basics for quite few things but also try to buy specials at other stores. I get baking supplies, spices, etc. at the Bulk Barn. Everything seems to go up in June and I read that it's the most expensive month, before Ont. produce comes in. This year the Bradford farm lands were flooded with so much rain that produce could be expensive. It may be too late for the crops to be planted there. Meat also goes up in summer barbecue season. Shoppers Drug Mart has good buys on butter, eggs and milk but they jack up their other prices. |

It must be terribly hard for young parents, especially those that both work and don't have a lot of money. Campbells soups except for tomato and chicken noodle are up around l.75. Cereal can no longer be considered a cheap food. Every year more and more people are flocking to food banks. Buying on sale makes a huge difference although the working poor may not have enough money to stockpile food. I hope Sobeys doesn't get too greedy after they take over Safeway here in Canada. |

Sort of apropos that you should mention young families. There is a young mother in my building with two preschool children, apparently her husband was killed in a car accident a couple of years ago. I was told she has an 'understanding' with some guy who owns a supermarket, she has sex with him and he supplies her with groceries. This way her job can maintain daycare fees and the mortgage payments as well as other expenses. Pretty bad when a mother has to do this to maintain a semblance of basic lifestyle for herself and her kids. |

We've only shopped at Sobey's once, and once was enough. Now that they have bought Safeway Canada, I expect prices in both stores to rise, as if they weren't expensive enough, if you can't beat the competition, buy them out. We have a great Save on Foods close to us, the staff is friendly, it's rarely very busy, and the store is convenient with wide aisles and good selection.. a bit pricey, but we watch the sales and buy a lot of fresh things that we don't get at Costco. |

How often does she have to have sex with the super store owner? Could be a better deal than having to 'perform' every Saturday night! |

Darcie: That is so sad and so upsetting to read. I guess when your "back is against the wall" it is better than letting your kids starve. I too dread when Sobey's take over Safeway. They bought out THRIFTY's (a local chain) a few years ago. Although Thrifty's was always more expensive than Safeway and Save on Foods, the quality of their meat and fish is first rate. |

It's not just Canada. I just read a statistic somewhere that 50% of all USA children will be hungry during some period of their lives because their parents can not earn enough money to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of food. It was in connection with the debates over our farm subsidy bill in which the Repugs are insisting on eliminating food stamps to the working poor in the USA in order to provide even more money to corporate farms. |

Longos and Metro are both really expensive here. Their customers must make good incomes. |

FuzzyO You are right they do have a lot of ethnic foods. I buy my toasted seaweed there $.98 saw the identical item at Zehrs sold in a single packet for$1.49 Freshco they came in a package of 3 Darcie last week Freshco had 18 eggs on sale for I believe 3.49 they were not outdated
Adam likes Naan bread I was at Zehrs picking up a prescription it was on my list. 2 pieces of Naan was 1.97 I buy 5 for 1.57 or last week on sale 1.49, The same as whole wheat wraps they are at least a dollar or more for 6 when I can buy 10 I'm glad neither of us drink/use cows milk the price for that is very expensive if you have small children you need to invest in a dairy.. oooh 02 I'm a very careful shopper and I don't like going all over the city because at the end it comes out to be the same when you account for gas.
Sounds like a movie I watched on TV not long ago Plot was similar, She should have sued the company for sexual harassment as most reputable stores would not want their reputations sullied |

We have Superstore, Safeway, Save-On, Price Smart (Save-on's non-union store), Coopers (owned by Jimmy Pattison as are Save-On and Price Smart) and our IGA hasn't changed to Sobey's yet. Price wise they rank: 1. Superstore 2. Price Smart 3. IGA 4. Save-On 5. Coopers Our grocery cost affordable on our pensios because we are lucky to live an hour's drive from Bellingham, WA. Two weeks ago we paid $6.99 for 2 lbs. (4.4kg) of Aged Cheddar cheese; skim milk was $2.59/gallon ($4.69 here); $1.29/18 count large eggs ($2.69 for 12 large here) and many other prices were 25 to 50% less than at home. |
