Chatting with a neighbour yesterday and he asked me, "Have you ever seen a salt-gun that kills flies"?

"No, can't say I have."

"Just a sec and I will go and get my salt-gun".

Huh!..I thought.

Sure enough he came back with a yellow and black gun which had a small container on the top full of salt.

"Here is what you do", he said. "Cock the weapon, aim it at a fly and BOOM...no more fly....it is tote".

Works like a mini shot gun with a salt spread of about 1 inch to 2 inches, as I tried it shooting into my hand. Even has a sight so ya don't miss!

So, for you folks who thought they had everything...give this weapon some thought and you can go around your house killing flies...cost about 35 bucks US.

That looks interesting! Elastic bands work fairly well, too.
I always take a high voltage fly swatter when camping which kills them in flight. And only $5 or so at bargain stores.

Green defense against flies: a planter of basil by the door or on the outdoor table. Flies don't come near basil.

Do you know if basil works against wasps too Erka? After a couple of years almost wasp-free there seems to be more again this summer.

Lilal: Wasps are especially bad this year. Previously, a plastic bag hung from the eaves was a deterent. Not this year. I bought a waspinator and it seem to work.

Do you have a 'WELK's' in your area? The waspinators are $2.00 each (instead of 8.99 at Lee Valley Tools).

E.T.A. Canadian Tire has the same waspinators as Welk's - about $8.00 for two.

I have a pot of basil by the door just because I like it there. Now that you mention it, I haven't had any trouble with flies in the house.

Re the waspinator, they really do work, do they? We have several wasps nests around and John has just fallen and broken two ribs so he wont be up to his usual wasp work for awhile. ....Say that 10 times fast if you can:)

Angora: Sorry to hear John falling off the ladder. Wasps are a big danger - got stung a few times. The waspinator seem to work - haven't seen any buzzing around the eaves or hovering over our meal since we put up the waspinator.

Sorry to hear about John having an accident. Its very painful to break ribs. My wife had osteoporosis and had to go on morphine when she broke 2 ribs.

I use spray bombs on wasps. The aerosol container sends a spray more than 10 feet.

I'm afraid that I wasn't clear yesterday in my post. John just lost his balance taking out the garbage and fell. He has Pagets disease so his bones are weak.
The worry is that no longer than a month ago the same thing happened, he just fell. That time he was lucky and only bruised his ribs.
Yestedy, in emerg they give him a battery of blood tests, xrays and scans and are now investigating the dosage of warfarin (for his heart problem) and sending him to a specialist to see why he just falls. None to soon, says I.

Thanks for you concern. :)

Angora, hope they find the reason this is happening. I used to do that, it was that I had positional vertigo and it kicked in just enough to make me loose my balance but was not consciously noticeable to me. It is now under control.

Let us know what they find please, hugs to you both.

Hoping John gets seen soon, Angora. That must be worrisome to fall for no apparent reason.

My daughter bought me one of those artificial wasp hives from Lee Valley a few months ago and I hung it up under the eaves of the garage. So far not a single wasp. I always used to get them in my composter and it was scary to open the lid.
Apparently you have to change its position (yearly?) as the wasps catch on that it's no threat.

Angora: Ray was on wafarin and was "light headed" - he's now on pradex and feels much better. A worry to be falling and
had paget's disease.

Wildie: I had a 10ft wasp spray and it did not stop the wasps from returning to their nest under the eaves. I am leary of using such a strong spray with spouse and dog around. The hornet spray is suppose to be more effective than bear spray in immobilizing a bear or man!!

You are supposed to use wasp spray at night when all the wasps are back in the nest. That way you get them all.
