Last January, at the urging of a good friend I took pictures of my condo windows because they had frost inside the double panes. I had mentioned it to the landlady and there was absolutely no action. This left me dreading winter coming as she was complaining about the high hydro costs, my lease includes hydro. I was talking to the condo association president yesterday, she asked for a copy of the pictures and today I got a call from the window company and made an appointment to have them fixed tomorrow. How great is that. They also gave me a list of what they look after. I was suppose to get that when I leased this unit but did not. I guess it pays to complain, they manage this well, they are even power washing all the garbage chutes today, it is so clean here and well maintained. |

Good for you! Windows are so expensive they must include the cost of a replacement anyway. |

Is that frost on the INSIDE surface or frost BETWEEN the two glass plates, indicating a broken seal between the glazings, which happens often. Last apartment had huge double glazed panels that never frosted but they had aluminum frames and no air break. The inside frames became blocks of ice on occasion. Yeah, the squeaky wheel gets the oil. I should complain more often because I see others who DO get a lot more action than I do. You have taught me a lesson...and I will squawk more. |

The frost in inbetween the panes, not on the inside. |

Most instances you can ask forever and the answer is always no. That is why I was so surprised to get someone come to look at it so soon. It is out of the ordinary. |

So the seal failed. There are companies that take them apart and clean evacuate and reseal. THis is worth it only for big windows. We had 4 foot x 4 foot panes so the company came regularly and switched windows out. Only 1 of our 4 failed after 22 years. Edited by Trotsky, Jul 11 2013, 11:32 PM.

I have seen them fail more often if they are south facing windows. When I had my large one go, one local glass company told me I would have to replace the whole unit (with 3 panes in it) for about 1,000 dollars. Someone gave me a name and I got another glass company replace only the one that had lost its seal for around 300. |

I face east, and luckily the condo corporation pays and looks after the windows, no charge. It is part of the condo fees of the owner. There are at least 7 windows that the seal has failed, maybe more as I can't tell when there are two double panes one on top of the other. I am waiting for them to come. |

Mine faced due North and it is true that the ones facing me, and thus facing due South clouded over a lot more frequently. I guess sunlight and rubberized seals are not copacetic. I'm living in the PAST here oooh 02 ...I almost forgot that I have 9 in THIS apartment and they face East-South-East but I think they are only about 5 years old. I presume the co-op will take care of any failures. Looking around at my MANY neighbors, I don't see any cloudies. Edited by Trotsky, Jul 12 2013, 07:20 AM.

I accidentally broke a bathroom window during a reno. project. It was a casement window and it was simple to remove. I took it to a window manufacturing shop and they removed the pane from its plastic sash, opened up the seal on the pane and removed the broken glass. Then they cut the replacement glass glued it in place and filled inside with some type of gas. The plastic sash was put in place and rewelded. The job only took a couple of hours. And it cost less than $100 to do. |

Well the two guys who came here are going to give a report to the managing company that they are too old to fix. He said all the windows in this building need to be replaced. We shall see what the company decides and I guess the board of directors will have to vote on this. Would probably increase the condo fees considerably, wonder what will happen. |

Good for you Darcie. As I get older I seem to feel it is alright/easier to complain, and expect things to be fixed. |
