Walmart employee fired after reporting dog in hot truck

A former employee of Walmart in Kemptville, Ont., says she was fired for confronting a customer who left a dog in a truck on a hot day this week.
Carla Cheney says the confrontation happened at this Walmart in Kemptville, Ont., on Tuesday.Carla Cheney says the confrontation happened at this Walmart in Kemptville, Ont., on Tuesday. (CBC)

Carla Cheney told CBC News she hadn't yet started her shift and was in her own clothes outside the store with colleagues on Tuesday when she spotted a Walmart customer leaving his dog in a parked truck.

The dog jumped out of the open window twice to follow the man, Cheney said.

The man took his dog back to the truck and rolled up the windows, leaving them open about an inch, Cheney said. The man then headed into the Walmart.
'Told me it was none of my business'

"I said, 'Is this really happening? I'm going to give him about five or 10 minutes and then I'm going to call the police,'" Cheney recalled.

She called the police and an officer arrived to get the man's licence plate, then headed into the store to find him.

Later on, the man left the Walmart and got into his truck, Cheney said. Before he left the parking lot, he pulled up to the table where Cheney was sitting with her colleagues.

"He pulled up to us and said, 'Hello, ladies, how are you?' And I said, 'You shouldn't leave your dog in the car,'" Cheney said.

"He told me it was none of my business and I said that that was fine, that if I saw him do it again I would just call the police next time. He said he was no longer going to be shopping at that Walmart, and I said, 'OK.'"

Different Canadian Provinces, different rulings on Health care. If you live in British Columbia your Health Care premiums are not paid by any government unless your income qualifies you to be subsidized. Before my husband retired ours cost $126/month for two of us -- and yes, having relatives and friends living in different parts of the USA I do know just how low a cost that was.

Sorry, I should have realized not every province is the same as Ontario. I recall my good cyber friend of many years in Surrey telling me years ago what she had to pay for that we do not. We in Ontario should be thankful.

Take care,
Pat

Is it against the law of any province to leave a dog in a car?

It is against the law to leave a dog in a car in Ontario when

Quote:

It is against the law to leave a pet unattended in a parked vehicle in a manner that endangers the health or safety of the animal. Under the Ontario SPCA Act, OSPCA investigators have the authority of a police officer when enforcing those laws pertaining to animals. The Act permits the investigator to issue a written order to the owner of the animal or to take the necessary steps to relieve the animal from distress. Non-compliance of an OSPCA order may result in the animal being removed from private property (including parked vehicles).

People earning a net income of $22,000 or less per year dont
pay for BC MSP health care. I doubt many Walmart employees earn
that much.

One neighbour works for a large grocery chain earning union wages yet decries all unions, not realizing that they too could be earning walmart minimum if it were not for the workplace union they belong to.

A lot of cheapass types bitterly resent paying dues. They like the benefits, though.

I guess I can probably say that I am the only person here who has never bought a single thing at Walmart.

I am a close second to you; unfortunately, while at our place on the Llano river, I was forced to make some bed linen purchases at the only store within a 30 mile radius...Wal-Mart.

Yes since our local Zellers was closed Walmart, 35ks away is the only place to buy any of that stuff. The alternative is over 100Ks away but we can always go back to the catalogue

Every once in a while I'd go to WalMart but after the Zeller store closed here in a mall, Wal Mart took over would not hire or take on staff that had many years seniority. One lady was with Zellers 35 years, she was not hired .. They had to reapply like the rest. I have boycotted using the store. I can usually find what I need looking elsewhere.

Boy that sure makes one aware of what this company does. I have no access to any big store except walmart for over 100 miles. I like to shop in
Costco but it is 200 miles away.
I went into walmart to get a colour ink for my printer, before tax the price was $56 I order it by mail right to my door and the total cost was $34 and I didn,t have to drive 35ks to get it.

We complain about how poorly Walmart pays their employees. However, my granddaughter's best friend teaches at a Montessori School (private school for children) where the tuition goes up to almost $30,000/year. She has her ECE (Early Childhood Education) and some other certificate, but earns just over $11/hour. Admittedly, the tuition is less for the lower grades, and she teaches kindergarten.

Take care,
Pat
