Walmart employee fired after reporting dog in hot truck

A former employee of Walmart in Kemptville, Ont., says she was fired for confronting a customer who left a dog in a truck on a hot day this week.
Carla Cheney says the confrontation happened at this Walmart in Kemptville, Ont., on Tuesday.Carla Cheney says the confrontation happened at this Walmart in Kemptville, Ont., on Tuesday. (CBC)

Carla Cheney told CBC News she hadn't yet started her shift and was in her own clothes outside the store with colleagues on Tuesday when she spotted a Walmart customer leaving his dog in a parked truck.

The dog jumped out of the open window twice to follow the man, Cheney said.

The man took his dog back to the truck and rolled up the windows, leaving them open about an inch, Cheney said. The man then headed into the Walmart.
'Told me it was none of my business'

"I said, 'Is this really happening? I'm going to give him about five or 10 minutes and then I'm going to call the police,'" Cheney recalled.

She called the police and an officer arrived to get the man's licence plate, then headed into the store to find him.

Later on, the man left the Walmart and got into his truck, Cheney said. Before he left the parking lot, he pulled up to the table where Cheney was sitting with her colleagues.

"He pulled up to us and said, 'Hello, ladies, how are you?' And I said, 'You shouldn't leave your dog in the car,'" Cheney said.

"He told me it was none of my business and I said that that was fine, that if I saw him do it again I would just call the police next time. He said he was no longer going to be shopping at that Walmart, and I said, 'OK.'"

Montessori is a very regimented system of child care with a few teaching elements. One of my daughters was hired and left in disgust at how much the kids were 'trained' to fit into the boxes - all the same.

$11 an hour???

Wasn't asking you personally, was asking myself I guess just generally why the Montessori schools would pay so darn little. in Ontario, thinking out loud so to speak. Sorry about that?

ECE trained persons, just out of college, start at about $23 in Quebec, my eldest daughter used to be in charge of hiring staff for a university day care

Checked with my granddaughter who just came in, and her friend had her own kindergarten class with no assistant and made $11 an hour. They just gave her a raise to $12 an hour which she considered an insult and she quit. Even grade 2 teachers here at Montessori do not make $23/hr. Quebec must be far and above Ontario in pay scale. Anyway, it is an insult for someone with a university education. My granddaughter makes more than that working as a receptionist part time in a mental health office while going to university.

I'll just bet there are lots of jobs that do not pay anything like we think they do.

Plus jobs are not easy to get for the young. My granddaughter has submitted so many applications to various places, and still no second job which she required for the summer

Take care,
Pat

In Quebec the Montessori schools are private and thus do not fall under the school boards or their rates of pay for staff.

I believe all Montessori schools are private regardless of their location.

They are private Fuzzy, and while I did check yesterday, I did not save the URL, but tuition ranges from something as low as $15,000 up to $28,000 and change and to think they paid someone with their ECE such a paltry hourly salary is sickening (at least to me). So many hit on Walmart, but do not have a clue about what is paid to more highly educated individuals. More and more I think the trades are the way to go.

Take care,
Pat

Private schools do not pay well at all unfortunately. I don't know what is best, working for little pay at something you love, or working at something you don't enjoy for a better pay packet.
