Thanx everyone, especially Delphi. The problem is I am on my iPod and DH is on the desktop most of the time, so it may be a while before I can sit down and do this.

Dialtone, Wildie - what do you think about running Microsoft Security Essentials AND Malwarebytes paid version on the old XP machine? It has to hurt the speed when everything is being checked twice, doesn't it? Which one would you uninstall?

As for Windows messenger, for example, according to my add/ delete program tool, I don't even have it on my computer to uninstall!
Skype has replaced Windows messenger. Is it in your list of programs?

Messenger is part of Windows. You might find it in Add/Remove programs under Windows Components. Or MSConfig startup. Or hidden in the registry. I would Try deleting the file first.

Hi Delphi, just checked this link, and IMO, I would leave MSE running and turn off Malwarebytes real time protection. You can run Malwarebytes standalone like most of us do once a week, you don't need it running in the background all the time consuming resources... especially on an older processor.

This is a disaster. My computer is now nearly dead. I did the MSCONFIG, and unchecked the items that I recognized I could do manually, restarted the computer and am getting all kinds of strange messages about " normal" start up versus custom versus something else.

MsMessenger is still on the list and I cannot uninstall it because it doesn't show up on list of programs that are in the computer.

When I start up I get a message that I have used the System configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts and it is currently in Diagnostic or selective startup mode.

The bar at the bottom of my screen is a different color, and none of my antivirus or malware programs are running.

So I tried to go back to normal and it won't go back.

HELP!!
