It wouldn't take YESTERDAY or any other date before today. It had ONLY TODAY as. System restore point.
That is strange , you should be able to pick a date of your choosing.

Its possible that 'system restore' is turned off, so this may not be an option. And if your are short of hard drive capacity, older restore copies may have been deleted automatically.
I used to be an advocate of system restore, but there are pitfalls to be encountered.
This why its best to use a good backup program and backup to an external drive.

From my #50 post.

I have encountered the same problems that bj has and thats why I have lost faith in 'system restore'.

The number of previous backups is limited by vacant drive space. As drive space becomes limited older backups are deleted.
Its also possible that the system restore is turned off. In fact it may have never been turned on?

And of course there's always the possibility that it was turned off by malware!

Its a much better option that a backup would be made to an external drive and that the drive would be completely disconnected from the computer.
If its not disconnected, malware can attack the backup also!

Guys, both DH are tech phobic. I appreciate your efforts to help and do not know what I did wrong, but I am sure it was something. The costs cover not only the new computer and wireless printer/fax/copier, but installation in our home, transfer of all files and software, some new software, and lessons on how to use new stuff as well as how to use new hand held scanner I won at a charity event.

Sounds good, BJ. You will be flying on that new machine soon.
I didn't see you mention a plug in external hard drive for backups; just another $50 or so.

They are a pain in the ass.

So BJ,
Is it a laser printer/copier?

I don't think so, Trotsky. We went with a cheaper wireless printer.

I've been following this and per the advice of you all, I have so far unchecked 13 boxes in the start folder with no ill effects. In fact, the computer seems a bit faster. I am keeping a list of what I've unchecked. (Just in case).
The site that I have problems with loading is Facebook and I am guessing it is because of all the pictures. Of course, on my ipad, it loads instantly.

My first scanner was a hand held one! This was back in days of Win98.

It wasn't long before I moved on to flat bed scanner!

Hi Julie, you probably know this already, but remember you have to restart your computer for the changes to take place. Couldn't advise your about Facebook, I don't use it.

It would be interesting to see your list of running processes, Ocali. The little List Processes program is the best way of copying them for us to see. I know that little program is well behaved; it doesn't install itself, so you simply delete the file when you are done with it. I think it is important to begin with the list and study it; unfortunately MSconfig only controls some of the processes. I often find remnants of some old antivirus program running all the time.

Delphi, one of the most comprehensive and complete snapshots of your computer can be done with Speccy, a free program from Piriform, the same makers as CCleaner. You just run it and then save it as a text file, just about everything about anything you want to know is included, including processes running. http://www.piriform.com/speccy

I'm running V1.22.536. Processes are shown under Operating system, scroll down and you will see process list. To get a full view of everything, go to file, save as test file, and then read the file after it is saved... quite in depth.

Thanks, I will give it a try! I still like my little lister, though. Did you notice it includes the entire path of the file for a running process, so it is considerably more useful than looking in the task manager listing.

Erka, that means it was just your Internet that was slow. A person should be familiar with the speed of something something else on the computer like running a word processor so computer slowness and Internet slowness can be distinguished. My router completely stops the Internet when it needs a restart, so it is easy to tell.
