Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after officers deployed a Taser on an 80-year-old woman in Mississauga, Ont. The Special Investigations Unit said the incident under investigation occurred in the Thomas Street and Erin Mills Parkway area in the early hours of Aug. 28. Their preliminary information indicates that Peel Regional Police had received calls about a woman walking along the road. The SIU said that police spoke with the woman and "at some point" a Taser was deployed and the woman fell to the ground. The woman was taken to Credit Valley Hospital where she was treated for injuries that included a broken hip. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/story/2013/09/03/mississauga-woman-taser-police-watchdog-siu-investigation.html I just can' believe these cops, maybe this elderly woman was carrying a knife, or maybe a fork? |

No it doesn't. I wonder who called in the report about the use of a cleaver which the police acted on. I will wait for all the details but maybe the police need more info. on how to handle people with mental health issues. |

I used to smile and wave when a cop passed me. No longer. It is now the other side of the street I seek. http://montrealsimon.blogspot.ca/2013/09/80-year-old-woman-tasered-in-ontario.html And this just after the Ontario government recently announced it will allow police to expand the use of stun guns. Which only goes to prove that it doesn't matter what weapons the police use, if they are not trained when to use them or not. And human decency is absent. They tasered Sammy Yatim after he had been shot eight times. Now they're tasering an elderly woman for walking along a road? What is happening? What kind of country are we becoming? Answer: a place where the violent values of Amerika have replaced our more compassionate and intelligent Canadian ones. A place where the mentally ill, or those in some kind of life crisis are in danger of being killed. By the police charged with protecting us. A place where because it could happen to anybody, nobody is really safe..." |

I agree FSG that the police definitely seem to require more training in how to interact with mentally ill or those under the influence of drugs, and hopefully this will be in place once they are finished with the Sammy Yatim investigation. Take care, Pat |

As in the case of Robert Djiekansky, all it takes is a stapler in hand to get tasered several times, until dead. |

Our young Mountie who was strangled and left in the ditch after stopping a drunk driver on the highway now must move to a different community - RCMP policy to move members after a major incident. It makes sense but what a terrible time for him and his wife in their first year of marriage. |

Erin Mills Parkway is a really busy road so I can see why they had to get her off it but surely several policemen could have stopped traffic and herded her off the street with riot shields or something. I guess we'll find out when the investigation is finished. |

Somehow police have the idea tasers are not all that nasty. I think they have to take a zap or two as part of their training to use a taser but there is a big difference between a friendly zap to a healthy young person than to an older person in a high stress situation. |

At RCMP Gespo training centre in Regina, cops use to be zapped as part of their training. It was abandoned when one young female recruit refused to partake a few years ago. She was dismissed from the program. TASERS use should be abolished. Wake up Sheeple. |

Tasers were introduced as a non-lethal alternative to shooting people. Sort of like when heroin was introduced as a non-addictive alternative to morphine. |

It was around 3 a.m. so likely the road would not be very busy at that time. Still, not healthy to be out on the road for sure. Take care, Pat |

I have a friend who is a sergeant. He did not have to be tasered, the demonstration during training was done to a volunteer. |

Anybody who would volunteer to be tasered would have to be stupid. True cop material. |
