Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after officers deployed a Taser on an 80-year-old woman in Mississauga, Ont.

The Special Investigations Unit said the incident under investigation occurred in the Thomas Street and Erin Mills Parkway area in the early hours of Aug. 28.

Their preliminary information indicates that Peel Regional Police had received calls about a woman walking along the road.

The SIU said that police spoke with the woman and "at some point" a Taser was deployed and the woman fell to the ground.

The woman was taken to Credit Valley Hospital where she was treated for injuries that included a broken hip.

I just can' believe these cops, maybe this elderly woman was carrying a knife, or maybe a fork?

The latest on this incident:

Tasering of 80-year-old woman with dementia alarms experts

Angela Pasquale says she can’t understand why police would Taser her 80-year-old mother, who wandered from her home in the middle of the night clutching a knife.

“Is there any reason, really, to ever Taser an 80-year-old in a state of confusion?” she asked. “I’m honestly baffled.”

Her mother, Iole Pasquale, suffers from dementia. After an altercation with Peel Regional Police, an officer Tasered her and she fell and broke her right hip. She is still recovering in hospital.

The incident — which took place Aug. 28, a day after Ontario said all front-line officers would be allowed to carry Tasers — is raising new questions about stun guns and police training for dealing with people who are mentally unwell.
