My computer -Compaq Presario, Windows XP- is having start- up issues: often it will freeze up. When I try to restore it to an earlier time it won't respond and I can't get it to go back to its original date. I have done a clean-up and compressed files , defrag etc. but no luck. Any suggestions . Thanks. |

The RESTORE feature can be turned off! I cannot advise you on the procedure because my computers are either Win7 or Win8 machines. However, Microsoft has a page on the subject. [ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084 ] that explains the procedure. Windows will purge older backups as available drive space is reduced. Its conceivable that if you have little room on your hard-drive that you will not have any backups left. Some malware will shut off system restore, in order to protect itself. So if your system restore is in fact turned off, it may have been done so, by a virus! Make sure that you have space on your h/d, run a good antivirus program with the latest signatures. And of course make sure your Firewall is in place. |

Wildie: Thanks. I have checked to be sure my restore is active. I have done a complete scan for viruses. I have 'cleaned' my files, compacted, defraged.etc - no luck it still won't let me restore or cancel a restore point. Should I turn off my protection and try it ? Any other videas? tHanks. |

Dogleg....that is exactly what was happening to my XP computer. As of yesterday, I am now the unhappy owner of a new WIN 7 computer. I can't figure it out...... |

If the system restore files are corrupted and its necessary to erase them, it carried out by turning off SYSTEM RESTORE. Doing so, purges all the restore files. When restore is turned back on, there will not be any files to restore from. New restore files have to be generated. on a day to day basis! I see no reason to turn off any protection and you would then be left vulnerable to malware. In the past, I have been left in the lurch by system restore and now I advocate backing up to an external hard drive. For some reason it seems that your restore files have been deleted. Malware can do this, as can Windows itself. Or they can be deleted in error by user. One thing that you can do, in desperation, is to remove the hard-drive, find/buy another drive and install this it in your computer. Using your XP install CD reinstall XP. Then buy an external drive enclosure for your old drive. Then you will be able to recover your files when the old drive is plugged into your computer. |

Get a copy of WIN7 for Dummy's and it will get you going again. There's little difference btwn XP, WIN7 and WIN8. MS renamed things but underneath the disguise, thers' s more thats the same than is different. |

Wildie: Thanks again. I looked around on a help site and they suggested doing exactly that. So I turned off my restore and let it reset the files then shut down then restarted and turned the restore system back on. I will soon find out if it solves my problem. So far everything seems to be Ok. But Fuzzy's question is yet to be answered. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

I have found MANY times that when my computer has been attacked with a virus or trojan, the FIRST thing the malware disables is System Restore, then it mangles the antivirus.l When I have gotten to that point I have usually done a complete disc reformat. Hasn't happened on my Windows 7 machine so far. <Fingers Crossed> Reminds me, I still haven't made a restore disc for Bob's laptop. Question? Will a set of Restore Discs made for my Gateway Desktop be useable on a Dell Laptop or are these discs computer specific? Edited by Trotsky, Sep 15 2013, 02:20 AM.

Rats!! Resetting the restore points helped but it still freezes up occasionally on start-up. Now what? Disc reformat? Trotsky it worked for you did it? I guess I must have a dreaded virus in my system. Damn! Double damn.

This may not be relevant to the problem you are having dogleg, but I ended up with a strange bar on my computer (Win7) and it would freeze up occasionally. I had to restore twice to finally get it gone. Then my MSE was leaving my computer unprotected so I did another restore and it corrected it for a while. About three days ago I did a long scan (took over 5 hours) and now everything is working as it should. Keeping my fingers crossed, but just wanted to tell you that if at first it doesn't succeed try and try again. |

Dogleg, what malware protection programs do you have on your PC ? Before you do a total reformat, (if you don't have your data backed up, you will lose it ) download Malwarebytes at http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/ do a complete scan, and see what it finds. Also, does your computer start into safe mode OK ? Maybe you have something starting or running that has become corrupted. DT, I did do a malwarebytes scan on my computer and it came up clean and did not solve my problem. Afterwards I did the long MSE scan and the problem has been gone, on my fourth day now. |
