Hi DL, are you using Windows Live Mail ? Just make sure you have your account settings right, I use Windows 8 with the downloaded Windows Live Mail, and it works great. I have all my email accounts in one place on my PC, including my ISP account... or can access them online. You mentioned your new PC crashed out.. ? Did it fall off the desk or what ?

Have a look at this link for some info. http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-configure-mail-in-windows-8-gmail-hotmail-outlook-yahoo/

HI DL, are you getting errors ? I would check your email settings, since it's your ISP mail that seems to be the issue, are you POP3 ? Check your server settings for authentication.. I don't know your ISP, but they should have an online site for correct setting up of Win 8. Even the slightest keystroke wrong or wrong check box will screw you up.

Trotsky, you forgot the http:// at the beginning of your link and that's why it didn't make a clickable link.

Dogleg, it is very common for people to have email trouble when switching to a new program. In my experience, it is usually some little thing like a mistake in typing the POP mail server address. If you can give us a screenshot of the account information you've entered in Outlook perhaps we can help. Usually the email provider has the addresses, ports, etc. available to pick up online. If it is Telus, both your POP and SMTP server is mail.telus.net.

No .not live mail. that seems to be the big issue. My email provider doesn't seem to know about windows 8 OUTLOOK. It all works OK except for incoming messages. Evidently I need to get to SETTINGS but so far no luck. Perhaps I need to go to a new email web page service. I think I need a degree in computer science, hardware design and the psychology of mind control to get this transfer done. Beyond belief!!!

Open your email program, click on accounts, properties. The server tab should show your settings.

I paid a computer teck 130 bucks to transfer my data from my old computer to my new one and also put it on my hard drive. But the new one quit after 3 hours and now I am back to square one. The new one seems OK but I cant get the emails to come in. What a nightmare!

DT: yes I have looked for all kinds of access points and settings to set my inputs, no luck. I notice also the time on my emails is out by 2 hours. but the start up time is OK. Maybe I need to abandon OUTLOOK and start my emails on another service. But getting away from the windows 8 kind of defeats the purpose of an upgrade.

DL, there are millions of Win 8 users that have working email on their PCs, me included and I'm sure Wildie included. Get your exact settings from your ISP provider, the email might have a different look, but the workings behind it are the same for everyone. You have an incoming mail server, (usually POP3) , and an outgoing mail server, (usually SMTP) the addresses usually are both the same but depending on your provider can be different. Do you need clear text authentication ? how about login with a secure connection ? Make sure you aren't using capitals or have any text changes in your user name and password.

I would be taking that computer back to the store and demanding that your mail be set up properly. You paid for it. Take a book to read and look like you are settling in for the day. If it takes more than an hour, start chatting with the customers thinking of buying a computer.

Thanks all. I just got off the phone with my email service. They tell me they cant support windows 8 OUTLOOK. Unbelievable!!! They say I need to hook up with Windows Live Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird etc. for them to execute my service. I couldn't make heads or tails why. Before I go ahead with this I will await your input . Thanks. My head is aching big time!!

I think I am about ready to explode! I bought a new Gateway tower which worked for about 3 hours and crashed out. My new one seems OK but the Outlook email service will only let me send emails but I cant receive any. My email outfit is no help. I have Windows 8 and their email service is OUTLOOK. Any suggestions as to how I can activate my system to let me get incoming emails. Good luck trying to get answers from Microsoft.!!!
Are the emails that you want to retrieve contained in a POP account that is provided by your internet provider ( eg. Sympatico, Bell, Rogers, Telus) ?
Or is it accessed by connecting to a web page? For instance Gmail!

Microsoft cannot help you to set your mail. In this world, there are millions of mail providers and MS cannot possibly cover every instance.

Advice will come from your mail provider. If you use BELL then Google BELL MAIL and look for the setup for OUTLOOK!
Windows 8 can practically set itself. All you need do is enter certain parameters.

If you post which mail provider that you use, I may be able to post a link to the setup page.

Just for fun, I Googled BELL MAIL OUTLOOK and I found this info.............

You can use Microsoft® Outlook® 2010 to send, receive and manage your Bell Mail messages.

Important: You must connect to the Internet before proceeding with the instructions below.

Select File > Info > Add Account.
Select Manually configure settings or additional server types and click Next.
Select Internet E-mail and click Next.
Enter the following settings:
Your Name: enter your name; this will appear in the from field when you send email messages
E-mail Address: enter your Bell Mail address (e.g., john.doe@bell.net or john.doe@sympatico.ca)
Account type: select POP3 from the drop-down list
Incoming mail server: enter pophm.sympatico.ca>
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): enter smtphm.sympatico.ca
User name: enter your Bell Mail address again
Password: enter your Bell Mail password
Remember password: select the checkbox
Click on More Settings...
Select the Outgoing Server tab.
Select the checkbox for My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
Select the Advanced tab. Enter the following settings:
Incoming Server (POP3): enter 995
This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL): select the checkbox
Outgoing Server (SMTP): enter 25
Use the following type of connection: select Auto from the drop down list
Server Timeouts: move the slider to 10 minutes
Leave a copy of messages on the server: make sure this box is not checked
Click OK
Click Next and then Finish.

I use the BELL example because its the one that I use, but the settings will be much the same from others as well!

Hi DL, we are at a disadvantage since we don't know what is or isn't installed on your PC. Here's the link to download Windows Live essentials. This will include the Windows live mail facility to setup all your email accounts, also some good free stuff as well. I use Windows Live Mail, and once set up, works as designed. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/essentials

I use Windows Live Mail also! Its always best to use two or more email programs on your computer. then if one won't work, you won't be stuck!
I have Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail setup on my Win8 machines for this reason.

OK thanks for all the help. It looks like I will need to forget about OUTLOOK and use Windows LIVE MAIL or etc. I went on MS chat and they said some IP outfits could get their email to work on OUTLOOK but mine is too incompetent I guess. Too bad because OUTLOOK seems really user friendly. I will have to work through the steps to do it in the morning when my poor brain recovers. BTW my internet service is Vianet.ca (Poor me) I talked to three of their tech persons but they seemed about as confused as I am.
