DL, when you are in the control panel, click on "devices and printers", then under the file menu, click "add devices and printers", your PC will auto search for your printer.

Thanks DT : When I get to that point and the search begins it never finds the printer. It is plugged in and everything looks good. Strangely when I expect to see the printer show up it shows Main PC. I have to go to the cottage for a few hours and will tune back in this evening. Great day on the lake 75* and sunny. Thanks again to all. Somehow I must have screwed some setting up when I was trying to get the sound working.

Unplug the printer from the computer. Reboot your computer. Turn off your computer a second time, reconnect the printer and boot the computer again. Windows should find and install the "new" printer.

Double check by going to START>> DEVICES AND PRINTERS.

Wildie: Thanks. No luck so far. I follow your steps but can't find my printer anywhere. When I try to print it tells me the printer is off line. When I look for the printer in the devices box and type in its description HP Deskjet 2540 Series. It says no file found. Any idea where I should go from here -except to my bar for a drink? Somehow I did something to make the printer disappear.
In Control Panel open DEVICES AND PRINTERS. You should have an icon for your printer. If its installed, the icon will show. And beside the icon will be a green 'check mark'! The check mark indicates that the printer is the default printer. (see my attachment showing my layout)
If you don't have what I have described, you will have to reinstall the printer using its install DVD.

The fact that the computer says that the printer is off-line leads me to think that the printer software is still in place and it more likely that your printer isn't connected properly, or its buttons are not set properly. Or its out of paper?
What type of printer do you have?

Why not reinstall the printer?

dogleg,

Try my method #18 and let me know what happened.
Windows does a good job of providing the software needed and If it cannot find a good match it will tell you to use the Drivers Disc...but first let Windows have a shot at it.

You can always use the disc installation later but for now let's keep things simple.

Thanks again for all the help. I think my computer and printer came with a curse. It turns out that the printer cable has an intermittent break in it. Once I used a new cable I am OK. In the words of Arnold S. ' I'll be back'.

That fits with what I said before!

Is it one of those old fashioned printer cables with the 2 inch plug or today's more modern USB cable?

It must be a USB cable, as computers don't come with the DB25 parallel ports anymore. Although, its conceivable that it may have a printer expansion card installed.
Of course, this is just conjecture on my part!

Many thanks to all of you for your practical suggestions. It is a modern design of cable but not well made I guess. What else is new? My printer will work on Wi Fi but I had trouble with it too so I went with the cable. Maybe when I have time I will go back at getting it going on wireless. Anyway I am good to go for now. Again thanks for the help.

I still have one printer. An ancient Canon that prints only black and white and runs off a parallel port.

Probably the last one in Canada.

Kind of handy though at tax time when I can print two returns at the same time.

What I like about it is the huge cartridge which is refillable. It's also very small and portable.

I recently threw out a 9-pin CITIZEN dot matrix job that even took the continuous paper. A friend gave me about 2 miles of the paper so I kept the printer until I ran out of paper.
Yeah, had the big spring loaded printer port.

It actually had a fabric ribbon that I would take out and re-ink. I think the printer dated from circa 1980. My dentist used it for billing and had it stored in his garage. He gave it to me gratis. (Yeah. after I'd spent about $5000)

Trotsky: That quote from B.F. is one of my favorites. I should get it for a bumper sticker. Again thanks for the help.
