This is more of an issue than I realized. How about you?

Was talking to my biochemist granddaughter recently and she said that this was a serious issue. Unfortunately, even if you purchase what is said to be antibiotic free, it isn't necessarily so.

This antibiotics issue is almost half a century old or older. There are even advocates of pumping people with antibiotics. The only problem is the target germs mutate and we end up with super bugs.

A pig from birth to the table takes six months. The thinking is pump the antibiotics and the pig stays healthy hence increases profits.

Ya buy any commercial food and ya takes your chances. But it sure tastes good. Enjoy! It wont last forever.

The article says the farmers don't use the antibiotics to keep the animals healthy but to promote weight gain and thus make more meat to sell. Also it mentions the water downstream from the farms and the harm it does. These things are what caught my attention.

I'm pretty sure antibiotics are used in livestock because they tend to be crowded together, often in very dusty conditions, and thus prone to diseases.

Weight gain may be a result, but it glosses over the conditions in which most animals are raised.

Think I'll go to our local buffalo farm and stock up. Is bison a healthy red meat, if no antibiotics are used? I've heard that it is very lean. A friend is allergic to beef, but can eat bison.

We buy bison by the half. It is leaner than Chicken. It's very lean takes less time to cook than beef. We really enjoy it. We paid 5.00 per lb . last year for a half. I've scouted out a local farmer though who will sell it for 4.00 per lb. We however have to pay for the cutting and packaging.

The farmers don't feed bison anti-biotics? Wonder why they do it to beef and not to bison.

Maybe they do. I guess you have to ask. We have a bison booth at our farmer's market but it is WAY expensive.

Why do you think Jewish grandmothers gave kids chicken soup for EVERY illness?
Have you ever seen a Jewish kid with gonorrhea?
