Bertie was looking out the window, something he saw obviously agitated him. I leaned over to see what it was he was looking at and he turned and ''boxed'' my face with a 1-2-3, leaving 11 punctures and slashes. I look a mess. Any idea what I should use as a disinfectant? |

Wash it liberally with soap and water, then use alcohol. |

Thanks DT and Helen. I did wash thoroughly, didn't use alcohol because that apparently is no longer recomended as it can injure skin tissue. I do have some Polysporin, will try that. I had some errands I wanted to do today, but really do not want to leave the house looking like this! So helpful Angora, thanks! |

That is what I would recommend, clean with warm water and mild soap, and then apply polysporin. Neosporin would also work. |

Oh Fuzzy....I would have said same as Helen and Bitsy. That is bizarre. Is there a clinic you can phone to ask if anything additional is needed? Please check out symptoms of cat scratch fever online via google and keep an eye out for symptoms. I had that as a teen and it feels like mono, but was misdiagnosed as leukemia, initially. Unfortuately, nothing you can do besides wait it out, like mono, but at least if you feel ill, you will know what it is. |

It may be time to trade Bertie for a guppy. |

I don't know how true this is. I was scratched many, many times in my life by cats and kittens and never had any bad reactions. http://www.drugs.com/cg/cat-scratch-or-bite.html "You may need a tetanus shot if you have not had one in the last 5 to 10 years." |

Jeepers, certainly hope a tetanus shot is not needed. He is an indoor cat which may make a difference. When he sees birds or squirrels outside he gets excited, but this time it was another cat and he was momentarily crazed. I guess even though he doesn't go outside he considers the backyard to be his territory. Dana fortunately I wear glasses! |

If you contact the health authorities and/or your doctor they will want to quarantine the cat and have an inspection. I had this happen when I took my mother to the doctor because a cat, which was unknown to us, scratched her. Then it happened again when her own cat scratched her. This was in Stratford but I think it's all over Ontario. Maybe it's the safest thing to do. Personally, I always put alcohol on any scratches or cuts. |

Put the alcohol inside you and the polysporin outside you. |

I like Heat's suggestion best, certainly have no intention of having the cat quarantined. I had no idea that was a possibility. |

About 4 weeks ago we had to put our little rescue dog down. He was the perfect dog when we got him, but continued to be more and more aggressive. He was sitting on the couch right beside me one night playing with his kong toy trying to get a biscuit out, when I moved it to help him get it out (like I'd done many times before), he snarled at me. When I reprimanded him and went to move the kong again, he attacked me, and I don't mean a nip. In the next 10 seconds I was bitten 3 times, and he lunged at me twice with a wild look in his eyes, and teeth barred. After about 15 seconds, he snapped out of it, realized he'd done something wrong, and ran into his bed. My wife was horrified, but lucky she was there to witness the attack or she would never have believed me, as he was (up until that time) a perfect gentleman. The worst bite broke the skin on my wrist, but his main canine teeth actually made it down to the bone. I washed all the areas off with soap and water, then alcohol and put a bandage on it. Since we have a grandchild and there are kids in the neighbourhood, we knew what had to be done. Next day we phoned the vet and made an appointment to have him euthanized. Now comes the fun part of dealing with the health unit. The vet wouldn't put the dog down until she had clearance from the district health unit, since he had bitten a human, and they usually quarantine the dog for 10 days to make sure he didn't have rabies. The health unit reluctantly said OK, since we had all his immunization papers and shots, so the deed was done and we thought it was over. The next day, (a Friday ) the health unit phones and wants to know all the details, they started talking about me needing a tetanus shot, and maybe even rabies shots. I told them he was domestic dog, had all his shots, WTF . After 15 minutes, I managed to appease the young lady, and she seemed Ok with me not getting any shots right now . On Saturday, another guy phones and wants to know all the details again, again saying I might be a candidate for rabies shots since the dog was a rescue dog and was found in the river valley, and could have eaten a rabid bat. Now I was getting worried, but he said I had a few days leeway before a decision was to be made. :cow-IthinkIamgoingmad: On Tuesday, a guy from Canada Food Inspection calls and needs to know some information about the head I sent in. Since he talked in acronyms he said he was from the CFI, so I assumed it was a wrong number wanting taxidermy info from the Canadian Firearms. After a couple more minutes of confusion, I found out the authorities had ordered a rabies test done on our dog, so cut off the head and sent it into the research lab at Lethbridge where they do the testing for western Canada. At 4 pm that same day, I got a call saying the dog didn't have rabies, so I didn't need to go for shots... whew what a relief. It was quite an ordeal, but in hindsight it's good we have these agencies looking out for our well being. I was thinking that I should have followed Ralph Klein's advice and just "Shoot, shovel, and shutup ". The bite took about 3 weeks to heal properly, and I have a scar to remind me of our 10 lb demon dog. Both my wife and I have decided our dog ownership days are over. We had dogs as pets for 30+ years and never had an issue before, now my wife is leery of dogs, and I have a new respect for their capabilities. |
