In Win8 you can search by moving your mouse to the lower right corner and click the magnifyglass icon.

In the seach box, type 'open office' then down below click 'files', All files found appear in the left panel!

To save a future hassle, browsers can be configured to save downloads where you want! So using Win Exploer, make a directory named DOWNLOADS and then in the browser tools, set this dire tory for your downloads!

Alternatively,
You can right click START, choose Windows Explorer and look under Computer>>Program Files. When you find open office you can put a shortcut to it in your dektop.

Alternativlier, ;)
Look in your START menu. The program probably put an entry in it called OPEN OFFICE...just click to open.

Thanks. Strange ,I see no sign of it anywhere. Maybe my download didn't happen. Is that likely? Should I try the download again?

Keep in mind that he is using Win8! Once O/O is installed, it will appear as a tile on the START page!

He has downloaded the install file, but cannot find it to initiate the install!

Did you search as I posted above?

Which browser are you using? IE10 saves in a different manner, than does Firefox!

I did try your search steps- no luck. The browser they loaded on this computer is 'Acer'
www.t.acer13.ca.msn.com When I search my apps there is nothing new showing and when I look at my downloads nothing new either. Strange. Any other things I could try? Thanks.

First off, the page that you posted ( www.t.acer13.ca.msn.com ) doesn't work? Acer makes hardware, I doubt that they dabble in software!

So. I will assume that you have Internet Explorer which comes with Win8.

Looking at your tile screen. Find IE, click on the tile. When IE opens. click the little wheel that looks like a gear! A menu appears, so choose VIEW DOWNLOADS from the choices.
The page that opens will indicate where the setup file is located!

If yu are going to download O/O again, here's a link to the site! http://www.openoffice.us.com/download-openoffice-free.php

Choose what you want from the 'Quick Downloads box' !

Win8 will be with us for some time in the future, so if you don't resolve it now, you will have to learn it later!

You may not realize it but all you do is download a setup file. When you open this file, it goes to work and downloads and installs O/O for you.

My advice to you is to go to that link that I gave you, look in the QUICK DOWNLOAD BOX and click which option you like! The setup file can be found when you click the gear (if you are using IE10- you neglected to say) and chose VIEW DOWNLOADS from the menu.

Check this link out! ............ http://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheMissingWindows8InstructionalVideo.aspx

I see the file that downloads from the link Wildie gave is
openofficesuite-setup.exe
You might try searching for "openofficesuite" on your hard drive to find the file. Then doubleclick on it to install.

No problem downloading it again; as Wildie says it is just a stub installer - less than one MB - so it won't take long or have much affect on your internet usage.

I must say I have been very frustrated with download/installs lately. It is very difficult to avoid the advertising and the other free software being pushed on the reader at many download sites. When you click on the "download" button, you often get something other than what you are looking for. But the link Wildie gave seems to be free of this nonsense. No doubt because open source software is free of commercial motivations.

Before you dismiss Win8 out of hand, check out this video!

I have both Win7 and Win8 and I now rarely use Win7!

In our household we have 2 Windows 7 computers, and 1 Windows 8. As Wildie says, the Windows 7 PCs are rarely used.

Thanks for that video link Bill, a great refresher and some stuff I'd forgot all about.
