Thanks wildie. Yes they are turned on. I wonder if I should get rid of alternate browsers on the computer and just rely on IE and see what happens??? One more strange thing happened to me this morning. My Widows Live email which has worked fine till now suddenly shows all my received emails in my inbox ;everyone I believe since I got the computer . Not sure how this happened and how to get rid of all unwanted that had been deleted before day by day. Other than deleting them one at a time-all 300.

I have IE10, Firefox and Chrome on all three of my computers and have never had this problem. I can't imagine why one would affect the other? Dial Tone???

In Windows Live make sure you are looking at the unread mail and not the deleted stuff! Look at the index in the left panel, to make sure!

Wildie: No the index is clearly presented but funny when I either delete an item from my inbox to junk or deleted the numbers don't change The items don't seem to arrive anywhere that I can find so far. Very weird???

I have IE10, Firefox, and Chrome on my Win 8 PC, and they all play well together, and all act independent of one another. DL, open your Internet Explorer, go to the Tools tab, Internet Options, Advanced Tab, then click reset. This will reset your IE browser back to default.

Edited to say, on your windows live mail, make sure you clear your deleted items, and make sure your ISP server settings properties says to remove mail from the server when it is deleted from the deleted items. (see attached)

DT: I am at a loss here. The email settings match what you have shown. However the inbox shows 168 msgs and the properties say 168 unread and 226 total. As far as IE is concerned I can't open it for some reason. Stumped. Thanks. At least battling this little demon got me out of leaf raking. My wife calls it a conspiracy.

A shot in the dark! How about using SYSTEM RESTORE and set your computer back a couple of days to a time when your mail was OK!

Thanks Wildie: I took a quick look at setting a restore point in my Windows 8 and it scares me. Windows XP was child play by comparison. I have a MSoft help phone number 877 330-5635 I might try them in the morning. I sure got some lemons with this software . Anyway I will tackle it in the morning when I have more energy. Thanks again.

I hate to disillusion, you but from time to time over the last 10 years I have tried MS tech support and never once was I successful in resolving a problem.

MS tech support is like a lot of other tech supports, located off shore, and you'll be lucky if you can understand their very basic instructions. If you do phone, be prepared for a wait online, and make sure to tell them you have your computer plugged into electricity and turned on, of course they will ask you this anyway. I agree with Wildie, I phoned once many years ago, and after wasting an hour of my life that resulted in me just reloading the original software off the recovery partition, and losing everything on my PC, I made a pact with myself to learn enough on my own, that I'd never have to phone back, and I never have.
