Couple make whale of a catch from beach

A digger was needed to remove a 20-metre long whale, believed to be a pygmy blue, from Himatangi Beach yesterday.
As a Palmerston North couple cast their rods into the ocean, they spied what they thought was an upturned boat bobbing in the distance.

Potaka and Tira Taite were surfcasting near Tangimoana about 10.30am on Saturday when a dark shape caught their eye. A quick check through their binoculars revealed not a drifting vessel but a bloated whale.
