Evidently Windows 8 comes with MSN as the adaptation browser in place of the standard IE. So I apologize for my confusion. When I looked at the IE icon and tried to open it I got MSN and thought I had an error response. So when I get the tiles on the start screen and click on the IE tile I open MSN on the screen. Can be confusing for a mind battered by time ,booze and other carnal excesses. I think I am OK till my next issue. BTW I am thinking of changing my email from Windows Live Mail to Outlook. Any comments or advice?? Thanks again for all your help.

HI DL, I think you are getting confused with the terminology. Internet Explorer is a browser, as is Firefox, Chrome, and a few others. They are used to access sites like MSN. In your case MSN is probably the home page on your IE browser. You can change the home page to anything you wish, if you don't like MSN then any other site in the world can be used. Changing Windows live to MS Outlook is just a matter of getting a free Oulook email address, and then linking your Windows Live email address to it, this way you won't miss any emails. I have 3 MS Outlook email accounts and have several Windows live email accounts linked to them, this way you don't have to notify anyone or any business sites that you have changed email addresses.

Thanks DT: I am a bit confused about the email change. I expected to scrap the Windows Live Mail and replace it with Outlook keeping my same email address. Evidently the Outlook service is cloud storage and doesn't depend on local computer memory. Is this correct ? Thanks.

Originally Microsoft Outlook was the email client bundled in with the paid version of Microsoft Office, Outlook Express was the watered down version of the full blown Outlook include with XP and previous OS versions. Both MS Outlook and Outlook Express were PC based, so required you to download all your mail onto your computer, this by the way was a great way to infect your computer with viruses and malware. The present Microsoft Outlook is online, and does include cloud storage with your free account. The windows live mail on your PC can be used to access your online outlook accounts, just add them to the program, or you can just access them online, I do both depending on whether I'm using my laptop, tablet, or desktop. Don't get too frustrated, it's not as confusing as it seems, once you get your PC set up the way you want it, you'll wonder what all the kafuffle was about. laugh123

Hi DL, you don't need the Windows Live Mail program to view or to access your emails. You can do it all online if you want, the WLM program just facilitates people who want a PC mail client like Outlook Express. You can access your online Outlook through this link :

This new Outlook is not as useful to me as Outlook Express or what I call the 'real' Outlook. It was very handy to be able to make notes in Contacts, can't do that now, or if you can I haven't figured out how.

You can put notes with contacts in the Windows Live Mail program. If you open a contact, you'll see an area to add contact notes and information.

Found it, thank you! I guess I hadn't been scrolling down far enough. Very helpful for noting the names of people's children and granchildren!

Keep them both, then if you have trouble with one, you can switch to the other! I use two! Thunderbird and Windows Live!

Re: getting MSN when you select IE! All browsers have an option that allows the user to select a home page that is the the default page when the browser is opened.
In your case, MSN is set as the home page! It can be changed to be any page that you want or even left blank if it suits you!

Although I have two email APPS most of the time I use Windows Live! Its a very good program and its never let me down!

Most of your problems that you are experiencing are due to your inexperience, not the with the program. Jumping around from one to another won't solve your dilemma. Stick to one program, learn how to use it and shortly all will be resolved!

I don't fight Microsoft and I let them have their way. When they pushed OUTLOOK EXPRESS on Windows users, I was happy to use the free product. When they switched I grudgingly accommodated to WINDOWS LIVE MAIL. I don't like it as much but then OE was always a pain in the ass trying to retrieve data after a complete reformat. Now the data seems hidden somewhere on foreign servers and is easier to retrieve...maybe.

So, go with the flow. Let GOOGLE fight with Microsoft.
