It has been over six months since I returned to Victoria when my mother said she needed me and so many downs with few ups since then. I made the difficult decision to not return to my wonderful job in Beijing as this time being completely on my own was just not as appealing as in the past. However, there are things I need to do there so next week I am flying to BJ to stay for a week, collect all my daughter's belongings, my things, deal with the housing agent and close my bank account (which is most likely close to empty).

I will be staying at a nice hotel close to the Forbidden City, visit friends, visit some ancient and not so ancient places and just relax for the firt time in months. I will try to send some updates about being there as a tourist.

Pictures? Oh dear, that is a tall order! I still need to figure out my mother's rather snazzy camera before Monday. Otherwise I will stick to my simple Canon Powershot.

BJ, I will be taking two large, empty suitcases with me. My third daughter fits inside one of them - not that she is going with me now. I need to pack up all her things she sent up from Shanghai as well as my stuff. So, some fun mixed with closing off that chapter of my life. It is unlikely I will ever return to teach.

No pictures necessary Blizzard, if that is a difficulty. You write well; we will have our pictures that way.

Why don't you use the actual translation (North Capital = NC) instead of BJ? LOL

The new camera. Rather than learn all the features. Assuming it has a P mode meaning program. Set it there and take pictures. Usually they are more than acceptable in most situations.

BJ, I suppose I could go with PEK for the airport code. Perhaps best to just say Beijing after all. The main concern will be ensuring taxi drivers take me from point A to point B once I am there because this trip I will most likely not be taking any buses. The subway is fantastic but taxis are still needed for some places.

Durgan, I believe I can figure out enough to set the camera to P, or have my daughter do it for me!

Fuzzy0, people actually write about places? What a marvelous concept! My problem is knowing when to stop writing.

Blizzard....the airport code is STILL PEK? How archaic!

Don't worry...I think people here can distinguish between me and a huge city :-)

My main concern right now is getting off the island! Trying to explain this to someone who does not even live in BC is no easy feat. I called China Air to ask how early I should check in to be told 3 hours. I asked, more than once, if 2 1/2 hours would suffice as travelling from the island takes time. The agent seemed to have little concept of what I meant.
I believe the fog seems to have lifted which means I should be able to take the ferry in the morning; however, it does mean taking a chance and only having roughly 2 1/2 hours prior to departure, or staying at my sister's - on the couch - overnight, or leaving today and staying at a hotel overnight. For some reason I just have not been able to justify the cost of a hotel in Vancouver.

It's been a long and dreary fogging on the island lately. I hope it doesn't interfere with your plans.

Wishing you a safe journey.

Have a wonderful if a little bit sad as you close up your life in Beijing.
Safe Journey and a some fun while you are there is my wish for you.
Come back to us happy, healthy and ready to move on to the next phase of your life.
Good luck with the camera. I mostly use auto mode on my camera, it does a good job.
